ROBINSON RECORDS HISTORIC NIGHT IN 42-35 WIN OVER PORTLAND STATE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jordan Robinson rushed for a career high 262 yards and scored four touchdowns and the Sacramento State defense made a stand in the final seconds to propel the Hornets to a 42-35 win over Portland State on Saturday night at Hornet Stadium.

The victory improved Sacramento State to 2-8 overall and 2-5 in Big Sky Conference play. The Hornets also defeated the Vikings (3-7, 2-5) for the sixth time in the last seven tries.

The game was back-and-forth for most of the night with neither team leading by more than seven. Robinson scored on rushes of 75, 40, 13 and 9 yards and posted the sixth best rushing performance in school history. His total was the most by a Hornet running back since Bryan Hilliard had 271 against Idaho State in 2008. Robinson also caught a pair of passes for 38 yards and finished the game with 300 all-purpose yards.

The Hornet defense also did its part late in the game. After Robinson put the team up by seven with 1:56 remaining, Portland State began its march down the field. Quarterback Alex Kuresa scrambled for a 36-yard gain to take the ball to the Sacramento State 32 yard line. Kuresa then connected with Paris Penn for a 6-yard completion on 4th-and-5 to give the Vikings a new set of downs with 49 seconds remaining. Kuresa followed with an 11-yard rush to move the ball to the 10 and added a 7-yard scamper. Facing 4th-and-goal from the 3, PSU used a wildcat formation and Penn found the end zone but the Vikings were called for holding. Kuresa was forced to pass on the ensuing play and his attempt sailed out the back of the end zone with nine seconds remaining.

Sacramento State finished the game with 324 rushing yards and scored all six of its touchdowns via the ground. Along with Robinson's career high four scores, senior Demetrius Warren and quarterback Nate Ketteringham also rushed for touchdowns. The yardage total was the most by a Sacramento State team since rushing for 349 at Idaho State in 2012.

Along with 195 passing yards, the Hornets finished the game with a season-high 519 yards of total offense. Jaelin Ratliff was the primary target for Ketteringham, catching four passes for 103 yards.

Portland State was also dangerous on the ground, rushing for 424 yards and four touchdowns. Kuresa had a team-high 198 yards and two touchdowns and Tago finished with 148 and a score.

Tyler Meteer (12), Malcolm Thomas (11) and Manny Scott-Anderson (11) each had double digit tackles for the defense. Seven Hornet defenders were credited with a tackle-for-loss, including sacks from Meteer and Ben Sorensen.

Sacramento State will make the short trip across the Yolo Causeway to face UC Davis in the Causeway Classic on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m.

QUOTABLE

"I can't really say how I feel right now because it just finished and the emotions haven't hit me. I'm sure when I get home or tomorrow morning when I wake up it will sink in. It was a fun way to finish (my home career). I go out there and have fun everyday whether in practice or games."

Jordan Robinson, Senior Running Back

SCORING SUMMARY

1st Quarter
8:38 - Portland State took advantage of good field position to score the game's first points. The Vikings started their drive at the Sacramento State 35-yard line and used seven plays to find the end zone. Nate Tago scored from 1 yard out for the touchdown.

1:29 - Sacramento State matched the score with an 8-play, 69-yard drive. Nate Ketteringham found the end zone on a 7-yard keeper.

2nd Quarter
14:15 - The lead swung back in favor of Portland State when quarterback Alex Kuresa rushed 55-yards for a touchdown around the right edge on 3rd-and-1.

9:20 - After the Hornets stopped PSU on fourth down, the offense marched 67 yards to tie the game, 14-14. Jordan Robinson started the drive with a 28-yard reception down the left sideline and Demetrius Warren capped the series with a 19-yard rush up the middle.

6:31 - Kuresa again used his legs to create a scoring opportunity. The quarterback scrambled 36 yards for his second long touchdown run of the game.

5:40 - Sacramento State answered just two plays later with a long run of its own. Jordan Robinson rushed up the middle for a career long 75 yards. The senior broke through the line and was untouched the rest of the way to make the score 21-21 at the half.

3rd Quarter
8:29 - The Hornets took their first lead of the game on a 40-yard touchdown rush by Robinson. The TD came one play after Ketteringam connected with Johnnie Rucker for a 30-yard pass down the right sideline.

5:44 - The Vikings wasted little time to answer back with a touchdown of their own. Kuresa found Josh Kraght for a 19-yard completion to tie the game at 28-28.

0:41 - The game reached shooutout status in the final minutes of the period as Sacramento State scored its second TD in as many drives. The Hornets used 11 plays to travel 75 yards in 5:09. 4th Quarter
14:26 - Just over a minute later, the game was tied 35-35 when Paris Penn dove in from the 1-yard line. His score was set up by a 67 yard rush from Nate Tago who was dragged down just outside the goal line.

1:56 - Both teams made some defensive stops before Sacramento State posted the final points. The defense stopped a fake punt attempt by the Vikings near midfield before the offense marched down the field for the game-winning score. Robinson carried the ball seven times during the eight plays and scored on a 9-yard rush.

NOTES

• Robinson became the eighth player in Sacramento State history to record 200 rushing yards in a game. He's the first since Bryan Hilliard in 2008.

• He's now tied for sixth in school history with nine games over 100 yards and has performed the feat in three straight games.

• Robinson now has 28 career touchdowns and is one short of both Fred Amey and Troy Mills for sixth in school history. His four rushing touchdowns places him in a six-way tie for second place in school history. Charles Roberts holds the school mark with five scores against Idaho State in 1999 and had two games with four.

• The last three games in the series against PSU (all Hornet wins) have been decided by seven points or less. The Hornets have scored at least 42 points in all three games.

• Sacramento State had a 200-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver for just the fifth time in school  history. The last occurrence came in 2004 when Ryan Mole rushed for 245 and Fred Amey had 165 receiving.

• Kuresa's 198 rushing yards were the most by a quarterback against Sacramento State in school history (opponent records date back to 1980). Montana State's Chris Murray rushed for 187 earlier this season.

• Prior to the game, the Hornets honored nine seniors who were playing at Hornet for the final time.

• Sacramento State has had at least one player with 10-plus tackles in nine consecutive games.
