WOMEN'S BASKETBALL OUTLASTS MONTANA IN OVERTIME, 83-75

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Playing in its first home overtime game in more than three years Sacramento State outscored Montana 14-6 in the extra period for an 83-75 win over the defending Big Sky champion Grizzles Saturday afternoon in The Nest.

Sacramento State (5-9, 2-1 Big Sky) won its third straight home meeting with Montana (10-5, 3-1 Big Sky) after having beaten the program just once, home or away, prior to the 2012-13 season. The Hornets also handed the Grizzlies their first conference loss and snapped their five-game winning streak.

"We're happy to get out of here with a win today," Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "When we needed them the most we hit some shots. At the end I was really proud of our team for winning the game off some steals and creating some baskets. Any time you can beat Montana you have to be happy because they've been the cream of the crop in the Big Sky for years."

The Hornets forced 25 turnovers and had just nine of their own. They outscored the Griz 32-6 in point off turnovers to earn the win despite shooting just 36.4% from the field.

Sacramento State had two shots to win the game in regulation after a pair of Griz free throws leveled the score at 69-69 in the final minute but misfired twice to send the game to overtime. The game was tied going to the fourth quarter as well and neither team led by more than four points over the last 18 minutes of regulation time.

The Hornets caught a second wind in overtime to pull away for the win. With Montana leading 72-71 with three minutes left in the five-minute overtime period, Sacramento State used a 7-0 run over the next minute and a half to pull ahead 78-72 with 1:28 to play.

Montana hit a three to pull within three points at 78-75 but the Hornets got a layup from senior Adella Randle-El and made three free throws and also forced two turnovers in the final minute to finish the win.

Sacramento State shot 4-of-7 from the field in overtime while Montana went 2-of-9. That came after the Hornets shot just 14-of-51 (27.5%) over the final three quarters of regulation following a hot start in the first quarter.

After scoring a career-high 29 points on Thursday Randle-El led the way again on Saturday with 17 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, four assists, and five steals with her first career double-double. Sophomore Maranne Johnson also tallied 17 points and led the team with four 3-point makes while junior Gretchen Harrigan had 11 points going 4-of-4 from the free throw line in overtime.

The Hornets came out strong and led 28-17 at the end of the first quarter. The lead reached 14 points at 34-20 before both teams went cold at the end of the second quarter as both made just one shot over the last 5:13 of the period.

Sacramento State still led 42-33 at the half but was outscored 20-11 in the third quarter as the Grizzlies leveled the score. Montana took its first lead of the game at 57-56 with 7:42 left in the fourth quarter but never led by more than three points.

The Griz shot 44.1% overall and were just 4-of-19 from 3-point range. Montana had a 49-39 rebounding advantage and shot 11-of-12 from the free throw line to stay in the game. Junior Kayleigh Valley, who entered the game leading the Big Sky averaging 20.1 points per game this year, tallied game highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds and played every minute of the game before fouling out in overtime.

The game was Sacramento State's first regular season Big Sky game to go to overtime since Dec. 29, 2011. The Hornets improved to 18-4 in home Big Sky games in three seasons under Harkleroad, who earned his 299th career victory as a collegiate coach on Saturday.

Sacramento State plays its next three games on the road with a trip to Idaho State and Weber State next week.
