Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Opening both its home and Big Sky Conference schedules, Sacramento State swept doubles and won five of six singles matches in a 6-1 win over Portland State on Saturday at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
Sacramento State (2-0, 1-0 Big Sky) opened its 2016 Big Sky schedule in similar fashion to the 2015 season in which the team was a perfect 11-0 in regular season Big Sky play and won its 14th consecutive Big Sky title. The match was also the league opener for Portland State (0-2, 0-1 Big Sky) after the Vikings opened their season just last night with a loss at UC Davis.
The doubles team of senior Jennifer Ong and sophomore Ana Loaiza Esquivias won for the second time in as many matches this season with a 7-5 victory over Taylor Rees and Dane Vorster at No. 2. Juniors Deimante Bulatovaite and Alina Soltanici had a 6-4 win at No. 1 and junior Andie Mouzes and sophomore Emily McColl cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 3.
Ong won the first completed singles match, beating Siena Peri 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Loaiza Esquivias followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 before Mouzes beat Rees 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 to clinch the match victory for the Hornets.
Soltanici beat Vorster 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 and Bulatovaite outlasted Sabina-Elena Preda 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) at No. 4. The Vikings were able to get one point on the board with a win from Kelsey Frey at No. 5 over Hornet freshman Sofia Wicker in a third set super tiebreaker.
Sacramento State is on the road for its next six matches, all of which will be non-conference contests. The Hornets will be in Southern California next weekend facing UC Irvine next Saturday and Loyola Marymount next Sunday.
