WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT HOME TO EASTERN WASHINGTON

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In similar fashion to Thursday's game, Sacramento State struggled shooting from long range and at the free throw line again on Saturday and Eastern Washington took advantage of a six-minute Hornet scoring drought to start the second half in a 100-83 win in The Nest.

"You have to give Eastern Washington credit: they're playing four of five kids a whole lot of minutes and they're getting it done," Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "They seemed to answer every run we had today. Eleven of 41 from 3-point range is not very good and I think we're just not playing hard enough, consistently enough right now. We're having a really hard time finding our groove."

Sacramento State (7-12, 4-4 Big Sky) shot just 26.8% from 3-point range after going 6-of-29 (20.7%) from three on Thursday. The Hornets were also 10-of-18 (55.6%) from the free throw line and shot just 37.8% overall. After a shocking loss at Portland State on Thursday, Eastern Washington (14-7, 8-1) remained atop the Big Sky standings shooting 56.2% overall, 9-of-17 (52.9%) from 3-point range, and a perfect 9-of-9 at the line in Saturday's win.

The Hornets had slow starts to both halves but, after trailing by eight points, 36-28, with 4:37 left in the second quarter, used a 13-4 run to take a one-point lead and trailed by just a point, 45-44, at halftime.

The start of the third quarter was what really decided the game, as Sacramento State missed its first 10 shots of the second half and did not score over the first 6:03 while the Eagles had a 15-0 run to take a 60-44 lead.

Sacramento State was able to get within eight points at 81-73 with six minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles responded with a 17-6 run into the final minute of the game to easily complete the win.

Senior Adella Randle-El did all she could to lead her team with 17 points, eight assists, seven steals, and five rebounds in 30 minutes played. Randle-El finished one steal shy of the single game program record, tallying six of her seven steals as well as six assists and 11 points in the first half.

Sophomore Abbey Goodsell had her best game as a Hornet with 15 points, all of which came in the first half. Goodsell was 5-of-8 from 3-point range while the rest of the team shot just 6-of-33 (18%) from the arc. Junior Gretchen Harrigan had her eighth straight double-digit scoring game with 10 points and six rebounds and sophomore Maranne Johnson also had 10 points and five assists.

Five Eastern Washington players scored in double figures with Ashli Payne leading the way with 23 points and eight rebounds shooting 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Hayley Hodgins, the leading scorer in the Big Sky, recorded her sixth straight 20-point game with 21 points and sister Delaney Hodgins had 16 points and eight rebounds.

Eastern Washington had a 45-41 rebounding edge though the Hornets were ahead in the rebounding battle until getting outboarded 15-9 in the fourth quarter. Sacramento State pulled down 25 offensive rebounds but converted them into just 19 second-chance points. The Hornets scored 35 points off 26 Eagle turnovers with 20 steals.

Sacramento State returns to the road next week playing at Montana on Thursday and co-Big Sky leader Montana State on Saturday.
