Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Idaho had four players score in double figures and the Vandals held Sacramento State to just six made 3-pointers - on only 29 attempts - in a 98-88 win Thursday night in The Nest.
The Hornets entered the game leading the NCAA with 12.1 made 3-pointers per game and Idaho was third in the nation at 10.3, but neither team shot well from beyond the arc on Thursday with each hitting only six threes. The difference was 63.8% shooting by Idaho on 2-point shots, a large rebounding advantage, and superior free throw shooting by the visitors.
"Idaho did a great job guarding us; They're an athletic team and they do a good job defensively," Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "Its hard when (our smaller guards) are being guarded by bigger, athletic players and its tough to do what we want to do. At times we were able to get shots we wanted when we got our offense started quickly, but at the end of the day Idaho just did a great job locking us down."
Sacramento State (7-11, 4-3 Big Sky) led for less than two minutes of the game but was close to the Vandals through the first three quarters. Idaho (14-6, 6-2 Big Sky) opened up a 16-point lead midway through the fourth quarter to put the game away.
The Hornets broke the NCAA record with 25 made 3-pointers at Portland Start last Saturday and shot 46% from long range in that game, but the lengthy Vandals permitted far fewer shots from beyond the arc and the Hornets shot only 20.7% on their 3-point attempts. Sacramento State shot just 12-of-22 (54.5%) from the free throw line as well while Idaho knocked down 20-of-24 free throws.
Junior Gretchen Harrigan led the Hornets with 17 points and had two rebounds and two steals before fouling out. Senior Adella Randle-El had 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals while sophomore Maranne Johnson (13 points) and junior Brianna Burgos (12) also finished in double figures. Senior Sydonia Daniels pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Idaho senior Christina Salvatore was the star for the Vandals with 16 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, and four steals, though she also had seven turnovers. Ali Forde scored a game-high 20 points and had seven rebounds and Karlee Wilson contributed 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Idaho ended the first quarter on a 12-4 run over the last three and a half minutes to lead 29-19 going to the second. The Vandals still led by 10 with five and a half minutes remaining in the second quarter before a 19-6 Hornet run gave the home team its biggest lead of the night at 40-37.
Sacramento State trailed by just two points, 45-43, at halftime before Idaho extended to a 12 point lead in the third quarter. Sacramento State got no closer than a nine-point deficit throughout the final period.
The Hornets did shoot 44.3% overall, going 29-of-50 (58.0%) on 2-point shots and outscoring the taller Vandals 56-50 on points in the paint. Sacramento State also forced 24 turnovers with 20 steals but scored only 21 points off the 24 Vandal giveaways.
Idaho also had a 14-9 edge in second chance points as the Hornets pulled down just 12 offensive rebounds, equaling their season low. The Vandals had a 48-33 edge in total rebounds and shot 55.4% overall using just eight players.
Sacramento State looks to bounce back Saturday hosting Eastern Washington at 2:05 p.m. The Eagles also had a disappointing (and shocking) loss on Thursday, 81-79, at Portland State. Eastern Washington had been 7-0 in Big Sky play and the Vikings were 0-6, including a 48-point loss against the Hornets in their last game.
