Box Score

POCATELLO, Idaho – Sacramento State senior guard Adella Randle-El recorded her second consecutive double-double and the Hornets put together their best defensive performance of the season in a 68-59 victory over Idaho State on Thursday in Pocatello.

The win was the first ever Hornet victory over the Bengals on their home floor, as the team had gone 0-19 all-time in Pocatello before Thursday's victory. The win by Sacramento State (6-9, 3-1 Big Sky) was also the 300th career victory for head coach Bunky Harkleroad, who reached the 300-win plateau with just 161 losses in 16 seasons as a collegiate head coach.

Idaho State (7-8, 0-4 Big Sky) led by as many as 12 points in the first half before the Hornets came storming back. Sacramento State, which had averaged 98.0 points per game through its first three league contests, shot poorly and had just nine steals but held the Bengals to just 59 points after having allowed 82.0 points per game in Big Sky play.

Randle-El, who had never had a double-double as a Hornet before posting 17 points and 11 rebounds last Saturday against Montana, followed that performance with 15 points and 11 boards on Thursday. She scored 14 of her 15 points in the second half, leading the Hornets to a 38-27 scoring advantage in the last two quarters.

Idaho State led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter in which the Hornets missed their first 13 shots of the game. Idaho State led by 12 points, 32-20, with three minutes to play in the second quarter before the Hornets ended the half on a 10-0 run to draw within a 32-30 deficit at the intermission.

Sacramento State extended its run to 15-0 scoring the first five points of the third quarter and taking its first lead of the game on a Randle-El 3-pointer. The Hornets led 51-45 at the end of the quarter and were up by 10 with seven and a half minutes left to play.

Idaho State got to within three points at 57-54 at the 3:44 mark of the fourth quarter but did not score over the next three minutes and the Hornets put the game away.

Junior Brianna Burgos equaled Randle-El with a team high 15 points, going 6-of-6 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to ice the game. Junior Gretchen Harrigan had 10 points and three steals as the Hornets shot 36.7% overall and were just 7-of-26 from 3-point range.

Idaho State shot just 39.7%, a season-best defensively for Sacramento State, and held just a 41-39 rebounding advantage. The Hornets shot 30 free throws while the Bengals had just nine, though the Hornets only made 17-of-30 from the stripe. Idaho State was also just 2-of-16 from 3-point range.

Thursday's win was the first time this season that Sacramento State won a game when tied or trailing at halftime (was 0-7). The Hornets have now started 3-1 in Big Sky play in three consecutive seasons.

The Hornets move on to Ogden to face Weber State at 1 p.m. Pacific time Saturday. The Wildcats are 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big Sky after crushing Portland State 102-73 on Thursday.
