Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Sacramento State scored three times in the first half, including two goals in the first eight minutes of the game, and held off a late rally to defeat CSU Bakersfield, 3-2, on Friday night.
Sacramento State (1-3-0) won for the third time in as many matches in Bakersfield, beating the Roadrunners for the third consecutive season. CSU Bakersfield (1-2-1) had earned a 4-0 win in its only previous home game this season.
Just three minutes and 22 seconds into the game the Hornets forced a Bakersfield turnover and junior Jennifer Lum scored her first goal of the season to give Sacramento State the lead. Less than four minutes later, sophomore Chelsea Arnold had a 30-yard run on goal and finished to the bottom right corner to put the Hornets up 2-0 less than eight minutes into the game.
In the 37th minute, Hornet sophomore Kylee Smith found junior Adaurie Dayak and she found the back of the Roadrunner net to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Destiny Butcher made four saves in the first half as the Hornets were up three at the intermission.
CSU Bakersfield was able to cut its deficit back to two goals early in the second half, as a Hornet yellow card gave the Roadrunners a penalty kick and Maja Green put it in for her third goal of the season.
The Roadrunners continued to pressure throughout the second half but Butcher and the Hornets held their ground. CSU Bakersfield did find a second goal but did so with just 32 seconds left in regulation time as Aminah Settles was able to beat Butcher. It was too little, too late for the home team as the Hornets picked up their first win of the season.
Butcher finished with a career-high eight saves and has now totaled 14 saves in her last two games. Bakersfield had a 16-10 shot advantage in the game with a 10-3 shot total in the second half. The Roadrunners placed 10 shots on goal while the Hornets put seven shots on frame and beat CSUB goalkeeper Tori Ornela three times.
Bakersfield also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks with four coming in the second half. The Hornets were whistled for a season-high 19 fouls and were issued four yellow cards in a physical game.
Sacramento State's five goals this season have been scored by five different players. Three of the five goals were scored during the first eight minutes of play.
The Hornets continue their road trip at 1 p.m. Sunday at UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos are 1-2-1 after a 2-0 home win over Texas on Friday.
