SANKEY SETS SCHOOL RECORD IN NON-LEAGUE LOSS AT WEBER STATE

Box Score

OGDEN, Utah — Darnell Sankey set the school record with 27 total tackles but Sacramento State could not overcome three turnovers in a 32-14 loss at Weber State in a non-conference game on Saturday.

The victory dropped the Hornets to 1-2 on the season while the Wildcats earned their first victory following losses to Oregon State and North Dakota State.

Sankey's tackle total eclipsed his previous high of 21 which came last season against Montana State. The senior's total also shattered the school record of 22 which was set by Ryland Wickman at Eastern Washington in 1997. Sankey finished with nine solo stops and also had a tackle-for-loss and a pass breakup. The San Jose, Calif., native also moved up seven spots on the Sacramento State career list as he now has 220 career tackles which ranks 12th.

Weber State took the opening kickoff and drove 56 yards on 13 plays before settling for the first of four field goals from Josh Kealamakia. After both teams punted, WSU intercepted Daniel Kniffin at the Hornet 26-yard line when Jawaian Harrison stepped in front of a short pass near the right sideline. That miscue led to an immediate score for Weber State. Wide receiver Cam Livingston thew a pass off a reverse and connected with quarterback Jadrian Clark who outran the Hornet defense to the corner for a 26-yard score. The team then attempted a two-point conversion which was stopped short to make the score, 9-0.

Kealamakia added field goals of 45 and 38 yards to stretch the lead to 15-0 with 3:31 left in the second quarter.

Sacramento State nearly cut its deficit in half midway through the third quarter when Jordan Robinson darted 69-yards up the left sideline for a touchdown. The rush was the longest for Robinson during his career.

Weber State answered with a 48-yard field goal before Harrison intercepted Kniffin for the third time. The Wildcats started a busy fourth quarter with a 27-yard rush from Cory Thomson to make the score 25-7. The drive chewed 7:26 off the clock and all but halted any comeback hopes for the Hornets.

Kniffin answered with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Justin Cox — the first TD reception of his career — during the next drive. However, an onsides kick attempt went out of bounds which gave the ball back to WSU near midfield with 2:05 to play.

Weber State appeared content to run out the clock but following a timeout from the Hornets, WSU threw a 30-yard touchdown to Drew Batchelor for the game's final score.

The Wildcats outgained Sacramento State, 448-246, and had 26 first downs compared to 14 from the Hornets. WSU also had a substantial advantage in the time of possession, holding the ball for 35:42.

Individually, Robinson had 106 rushing yards and averaged 8.8 yards per carry on his 12 attempts. Kniffin finished 14-of-32 for 137 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. Cox and Robinson each caught four passes to share the team lead.

Clark was 19-of-36 for 246 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Livingston was the leading receiver, hauling in eight passes for 94 yards. Treshawn Garrett rushed 26 times for 101 yards.

Sacramento State returns home to face Eastern Washington in its Big Sky Conference opener next Saturday, Sept. 26. Kickoff against the Eagles will come at 6 p.m. Any active military members will receive two free tickets with identification.
