Box Score RENO, Nev. - Nevada scored less than three minutes into the game and withstood a late flurry of offensive pressure from Sacramento State for a 1-0 win on Friday night in Reno.
Sacramento State (2-6-0) concluded the non-conference portion of its schedule with Friday's game as Nevada (2-4-1) won for the sixth time in the last seven meetings between the schools.
The Hornets have scored three times this season in the first eight minutes of a game, but on Friday it was the opponent that got a quick score. On the first corner kick of the game Nevada's Hannah Wuensche was able to find teammate Lindsey Salcido for a header into the Hornet goal, scoring just two minutes and 23 seconds into the contest.
The quick goal by the Wolf Pack was the only shot on goal for either team in the first half. They combined for just six total shots in the opening period with the Hornets credited with just two shots, both of which came in the first seven minutes of the contest.
Sacramento State did not have a shot on goal until the 75th minute, but that initial try on frame from junior Jennifer Lum ignited the Hornet offense. The visitors placed six shots on goal over the final 15 minutes and had several near misses.
In the 76th minute Hornet junior Maggie Pleis chipped a ball over Nevada goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos that was headed into the vacant net before a Wolf Pack defender chased it down and cleared the ball off the goal line.
In the 89th minute junior Adaurie Dayak was denied by Quintos on a point blank shot, and in the final minute of play Quintos made a leaping effort to deflect a shot off the crossbar and out of play on a final attempt by Hornet sophomore Kayla Collins.
Lum had a game-high three shots while Pleis put both of her shot attempts on goal. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Destiny Butcher made two saves before coming out of the game in the 84th minute due to injury.
Nevada had a 9-8 shot advantage for the game but the Hornets were 6-3 in shots on goal. The Wolf Pack took nine corner kicks to just two for the Hornets. Quintos was credited with five saves for the shutout.
