VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS UC DAVIS, WINS 10TH STRAIGHT AND IMPROVES TO 11-1

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior outside hitters Lauren Kissell (16 kills, .438) and Sloan Lovett (14 kills, .355) combined for 30 of Sacramento State's 40 kills to lead the Hornets to a three-set sweep of UC Davis (26-24, 25-20, 25-15) in a non-conference rivalry volleyball match Tuesday evening at Hickey Gym.

The good times continue to roll for a Hornet squad which has now won 10 straight contests, and improved its record to 11-1, matching the best mark in school history. In fact, in the storied history of the Sacramento State volleyball program, only the 1981, 1990 and 1995 teams had started a season 11-1 prior to this year. Only two teams (1995, 2015) have started a season 11-1 in the Div. I era (1991-pres.).

The 10-match winning streak is the longest since the 2007 squad won 15 straight, and is now tied for the sixth longest streak in the Div. I era. In addition, Sacramento State was able to continue its dominance of UC Davis, improving to 51-21 all-time against the Aggies, and 22-11 when playing in Davis.

The Hornets dominated in all facets of the match tonight, posting more kills (40-32), digs (54-41), team blocks (12.0-6.0) and a healthier hitting percentage (.222-.067) than their rivals from across the Causeway. With the exception of a brief 1-0 Aggie lead at the beginning of the second set, the Hornets never trailed during the final two frames. Sacramento State posted a robust 27 digs and 8.0 teams blocks in the second set alone.

In the first set, UC Davis (4-7) jumped out to a 5-1 lead before the Hornets eventually tied things at 15-15. Both teams went back and forth for a number of points, and with the set tied at 24-24, Lovett came through with back-to-back kills to give the Hornets the first set win and momentum the team would not relinquish.

"We served well, played very good defense and UC Davis had a tough time stopping our outside hitters," Sacramento State head coach Ruben Volta said. "Kennedy (Kurtz) set a very good match tonight. She ran down a lot of balls we didn't pass or dig well and put up very hittable balls.

"The team is playing with a lot of confidence right now, and that was very evident tonight. We started the match slow, there was a big crowd and we could have cracked, but that didn't happen. We're taking things one match at a time, but I don't see any reason why we can't continue to play hard and play well."

Kissell's 16 kills came with just two errors in 32 attacks while Lovett's 14 kills accompanied just three errors in 31 attacks. Lovett is now leading the team with 3.50 kills per set and a .241 hitting percentage while Kissell is right behind with 3.49 kills per set and a .263 hitting percentage. Kissell and Lovett, which have become one of the more lethal outside hitter combinations in the Big Sky Conference, were the only Hornets with more than five kills.

Sophomore setter Kennedy Kurtz finished with 35 assists, one ace, seven digs and one block, and set a number of beautiful balls while on the run. Of the Hornets' 12.0 team blocks, a match-high six came from junior Madeline Cannon while junior Courtney Dietrich and sophomore Shannon Boyle each finished with four. Boyle also had five kills and a match-high tying 17 digs while libero Lexie Skalbeck also chipped in 17 digs. Morgan Stanley finished with two aces, while Kurtz, Cannon and Skalbeck also added an ace.

"Our passing was very good tonight, and it really helped me distribute the offense," Kurtz said. "Our outside hitters were unbelievable, and hitting all kinds of angles.

"We've been able to consistently get teams out of system, and we continue to grow more confident while staying humble. Last year, we had a bitter five-set loss to UC Davis, so this match meant a lot to our team. It feels good to get a little revenge, and I'm extremely proud of my teammates right now."

For UC Davis, which hit .088 and -.172 in the second and thirds sets, respectively, Kaylin Squyres had a team-high 10 kills and 12 digs while Allie Wegener added nine kills and 12 digs.

The Hornets will now turn their attention to the 13th annual Sacramento State Invitational, which takes place on Friday and Saturday. The tournament features four teams and six matches played over two days, beginning on Friday at 4:30 p.m. with Santa Clara taking on Kent State. The Hornets play Friday night vs. Nevada at 7 p.m., and play two more matches on Saturday. For complete tournament information, including schedule and ticket prices, please click here.
