Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State took 17 shots, placing seven on goal, but could not beat Fresno State goalkeeper Domenique Banta and the Bulldogs got a goal in the 32nd minute for a 1-0 win on Sunday at Hornet Field.
Sacramento State (2-5-0) put six shots on goal in the second half and had a 13-6 overall shot advantage for the period but was unable to find an equalizer as Fresno State (1-6-0) picked up its first win of the season.
"I was really happy with how we responded in the second half," Sacramento State head coach Randy Dedini said. "We dominated play and possession and if we can put two halves like that together we can be really good. I thought the fighting spirit with this team was strong and it was just unfortunate we couldn't put one in the back of the net."
Banta, one of three goalies the Bulldogs have used this season, had made just six stops through her first three games played of the year but was strong in goal on Sunday, making several superb saves in the second half.
The best came early in the second half as she denied Hornet junior Alexa Heinzer on a shot from point blank range with a lunging save. The Hornets had seven corner kicks in the second half alone and created a lot of dangerous chances, but the Bulldog defense blocked three shots in addition to Banta's seven saves.
Junior Jennifer Lum had a game-high five shots and put two on goal, missing a pair of shots high attacking loose balls just outside the box. Sophomore Andrea Boehm had four shots and a pair of Hornets notched three tries.
The lone goal in the game came off a set piece in the 32nd minute. The Hornets were whistled for a foul just to the right of the 18-yard box and Fresno State's Amanda Nunes played the free kick short to teammate Ashari Hines, whose ball into the goalmouth was redirected in by sophomore Peyton Cline.
Fresno State had a 9-4 shot advantage in the first half and controlled play for the most part, taking three corner kicks but putting just two shots on goal. The visitors had three shots on goal in the second half denied by Hornet goalkeeper Destiny Butcher, who has now made at least four saves in five straight games, allowing just single goals in her last two contests.
The Hornets allowed just one goal for the third time this season but were shut out in two of those games. Sacramento State had scored seven goals in its three previous contests before failing to score on Sunday.
Sacramento State played the last two minutes and 54 seconds of the match up a man after Fresno State's Rianna Cota was ejected after picking up her second yellow card, but the Hornets did not get a shot away in that time. Banta, a sophomore, picked up her second career shutout and third career win.
Sacramento State has just one non-conference game remaining before opening Big Sky play, as the Hornets will be at Nevada on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
