Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - On a 106 degree afternoon Sacramento State got goals from juniors Jennifer Lum and Alexa Heinzer and sophomore Kayla Collins while taking a season-high 22 shots with 11 shots on goal in a 3-1 win over Cal State East Bay at Hornet Field.
Sacramento State (2-4-0) scored three goals for the second time in the last three games, taking a 3-0 lead before Cal State East Bay (1-3-0) scored its goal in the 73rd minute.
"We got the win and we're happy about that," Sacramento State head coach Randy Dedini said. "We started out slow and were moving the ball a little too slowly in the first half and in the second half we were combining the ball a lot better and moving the ball faster. Overall I was pretty happy but we need to do a little bit better job controlling the ball and not giving teams free kicks in our end."
Heinzer and Collins both had a goal and an assist in the match while Collins and Lum moved into a tie with junior Adaurie Dayak with two goals this season. The Hornets have scored seven goals in the last three games after scoring just twice in their first three games of the season.
Sacramento State controlled play throughout with a 22-7 overall shot advantage and an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. The home team also had a 7-1 tally in corner kicks and spent most of the contest on the Pioneer side of the field.
Lum broke the ice in the 19th minute. The Hornets were awarded a free kick just to the right of the Cal State East Bay penalty area and Heinzer took the set piece that found Lum after a deflection for a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and in.
The Hornets had a 13-3 edge in shots in the first half but scored just once. Just over six minutes into the second half Sacramento State scored again off a corner kick. Collins played the ball short to junior Lydia Bowman, who lofted the ball into the Pioneer goalmouth where Heinzer headed it in for her first goal of the year.
In the 70th minute Sacramento State created an odd-man break down the right side of the field and sophomore Andrea Boehm sent a cross into the goalmouth for a close finish by Collins.
Cal State East Bay got one goal back as Mindy Castro scored through traffic off of a corner kick but that was all the Hornets would allow. Redshirt freshman Destiny Butcher wasn't forced to make too many difficult stops, finishing with four saves for her second win of the year.
The shot total was closer in the second half, with the Hornets holding a 9-4 edge as they went deeper on their bench with a comfortable lead into the later stages of the final period. Collins and sophomore Amanda Mielke led the way with four shots apiece while Heinzer, Lum, and junior Kassidy Kellogg each put two shots on goal.
Winners of two of their last three games, the Hornets play their final non-conference home game on Sunday hosting Fresno State at 1 p.m.
