Box Score SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Lauren Kissell had a match-high 15 kills, Sloan Lovett added nine kills and Lexie Skalbeck had a match-high tying 15 digs to lead Sacramento State to a 3-1 road win at San Jose State in the third and final round of the SCU/SJSU Volleyball Invite on Saturday evening. Match scores were 25-16, 18-25, 25-21, 25-15.
With tonight's win, the Hornets, who opened the season yesterday, concluded the tournament with a 2-1 record. That included a 3-0 victory against Rutgers yesterday and a 3-1 loss to Cal Poly earlier this afternoon.
Sacramento State finished the tournament with averages of 12.82 kills, 14.55 digs and 2.18 blocks per set while hitting .219 over the three matches. The outside hitter tandem of Kissell (3.91 kps, .271) and Lovett (3.73 kps, .309) were on fire all weekend, as the duo combined for 84 of the team's 141 total kills. For their efforts, Kissell, Lovett and Skalbeck were each named to the all-tournament team. Skalbeck averaged 4.36 digs per set during the tournament.
In tonight's match, the Hornets, despite finishing with just two aces, served tough and consistently threw San Jose State out of its offense as the Spartans were passing balls well off the net. Sacramento State also limited the Spartans to a .087 hitting percentage as San Jose State had 48 kills and 35 errors in 150 total attacks. In addition, the Spartans failed to hit above .171 in any of the four sets.
The Hornets committed 19 less attack errors and finished with 12.0 team blocks. That included six blocks from Madeline Cannon and five each from Kissell and Courtney Dietrich. Although Sacramento State finished with seven less kills than the Spartans, the Hornets were much more proficient, hitting .195 while also tallying 52 digs. Of Lovett's nine kills, she combined for five and hit .714 (5-0-7) during the final two sets.
"I was really pleased with our serve and composure tonight," Sacramento State head coach Ruben Volta said. "Sloan played like a senior all weekend, and was locked in during the final two sets tonight. I was happy with our effort all weekend; we played very good defense at times, attacked well on the outsides, and showed a lot of competitiveness."
Kissell had at least four kills in each of the Hornets' three victorious sets, Dietrich had six kills, five blocks and a team-high .462 hitting percentage, and Lovett finished with nine kills, a pair of aces and a .240 hitting percentage. Skalbeck (15) and true freshman Skyler Takeda (10) both finished with double figures in digs and Cannon had five kills to go along with her six blocks.
Rightside hitter Shannon Boyle, who was off to a hot start with three kills and a .375 hitting percentage, had to exit the match early in the second set with back pain. Morgan Stanley was shifted to the right side the rest of the way and finished with three kills, three digs and three blocks. Setter Kennedy Kurtz had 35 assists and seven digs, and Julia Wright finished with four digs.
For San Jose State, Tyanna Roy (12), Summer Avery (11) and Giulia Gavio (10) each posted double digits in kills.
Sacramento State returns to action next week when the team plays four matches, beginning on Tuesday for the home opener against CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m. The Hornets will then play three matches over two days at a tournament hosted by Campbell in North Carolina.
