Box Score SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Five Cal Poly players had double figures in kills as the Mustangs defeated Sacramento State, 3-1 (25-23, 26-28, 25-20, 25-17) in the second round of the SCU/SJSU Volleyball Invite Saturday afternoon at Spartan Gym.
With the loss, Sacramento State, which was playing its second match of the season, dropped to 1-1 at the tournament. The Hornets swept Rutgers yesterday evening in Santa Clara. Cal Poly defeated San Jose State in four sets yesterday and improved to 2-0 this season, and at the tournament.

Cal Poly had more kills (62-50), aces (9-5) and digs (74-55) than Sacramento State while also recording a higher hitting percentage (.273-.211). The Mustang fivesome of Taylor Gruenewald (14), Adlee Van Winden (14), Hannah Schleis (11), Raeann Greisen (11) and Savannah Niemen (10) combined for 60 of the team's 62 kills.
In the first set, the Hornets, who were trailing, 24-21, got consecutive points including a Lexie Skalbeck ace to close within, 24-23, but a Sacramento State attack error allowed Cal Poly to pull out the 25-23 win. In the second set, the Hornets saved a set point at 23-24, and eventually won, 28-26, on a combo block from Brie Gathright and Kennedy Kurtz on set point.
The Hornets were as close as 23-20 in the third set and 19-15 in the fourth before falling.
Sacramento State's outside hitter combination of seniors Lauren Kissell (15 kills, .316) and Sloan Lovett (14 kills, .370) combined for 29 kills and a .338 hitting percentage. Shannon Boyle had eight kills and 10 digs, Skalbeck had a team-high 17 digs and Gathright led all players with five blocks despite playing just three sets. Morgan Stanley added 13 digs, Kurtz 36 assists and three blocks, and Madeline Cannon had two aces and three blocks.
Sacramento State hit .333 in its victorious second set, but hit below .180 in each of the other three frames.
