WOMEN'S SOCCER PUTS EIGHT SHOTS ON GOAL BUT LOSES AT PACIFIC 1-0

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. – Sacramento State had a 16-9 overall shot advantage and put eight shots on goal with consistent offensive pressure but Pacific freshman goalkeeper Regan Heslop made all eight saves and the Tigers got a goal in the 49th minute for a 1-0 win on Friday night in Stockton.

Heslop, making her first collegiate appearance after not playing in Pacific's first two games of the year, made four saves in each half for the blank sheet. Pacific improved to 1-2-0 on the young season while the Hornets dropped to 0-2-0.

Heslop set the tone early, denying three Sacramento State shots in the first 14 minutes of the contest. Sacramento State redshirt freshman goalkeeper Destiny Butcher was also solid in the first half with two saves in a scoreless opening period in which the Hornets had an overall shot advantage of 7-4.

Just two minutes into the second half junior Kassidy Kellogg had a header try off a corner from sophomore Kayla Collins but was denied by Heslop. Less than two minutes later Pacific freshman defender Courtney Callister collected a loose ball atop the Hornet box and fired a rocket to the upper right corner to score her first career goal on her first career shot.

The Hornets continued to apply pressure looking for an equalizer but couldn't find one. In the last six minutes of regulation time the visitors had two corner kicks and two shots but were unable to place another attempt on goal.

Sacramento State's 16 shots on Friday came after the team recorded just three shot attempts on Monday at UC Davis. Kellogg and juniors Maggie Pleis and Lydia Bowman each put three shots on goal, with Pleis taking a game-high five shots overall. Butcher totaled three saves in her second career game.

In addition to the lofty advantage in shots the Hornets also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Pacific avenged a 1-0 double overtime loss to the Hornets last year in Sacramento, and Sacramento State had recorded a 2-1 win over the Tigers in Stockton in 2013.

Sacramento State will host San Jose State in its home opener on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be Future Hornet Kids Club day as the first 250 fans in attendance will receive free team photo posters and the Hornets will sign autographs after the game.
