BASEBALL EDGED BY NORTH DAKOTA IN SERIES FINALE, 2-1

Box Score

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Sacramento State junior outfielder Nathan Lukes hit his fifth home run of the season and sophomore Sam Long allowed just five hits over seven innings but North Dakota rallied with two runs in the seventh inning for a 2-1 win on Sunday.

North Dakota (16-20, 10-8 WAC), which entered the weekend tied with the Hornets in the WAC standings, moved ahead by taking two of three in the series. Sacramento State (22-21, 9-9 WAC) scored five runs in a win over UND on Friday but was held to one total run over the last two games of the series.

Lukes broke a scoreless tie with a home run in the fifth inning on Sunday, launching a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall leading off the inning. Long had allowed just two hits over the first six innings but North Dakota staged a rally in the seventh.

Tyler Follis reached on a leadoff bunt single and Jeff Campbell drew a walk to open the inning. After a fly out UND catcher Brett Harrison singled through the left side to drive in Follis with the tying run and advance Campbell to third. Long induced another fly out but designated hitter Luis Calvo singled to right with two away to bring in Campbell with the go-ahead run.

The Hornets got a two-out single in the eighth and nothing more, and Campbell, who is also North Dakota's closer, set down the side in order in the ninth for his eighth save of the season. Starter Alex Twenge went 6.1 innings for the win, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Long had five strikeouts and just one walk in a strong seven innings for the Hornets and senior Ty Nichols struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning. The home run by Lukes was the team's only extra base knock among its seven hits in the game.

Senior Scotty Burcham went 3-for-5 Sunday for his third multi-hit game in as many contests in the series, going 8-for-13 (.615) over the three games with two runs scored. Freshman Dan Deely went 2-for-3 on Sunday and junior Chris Lewis had a single and a walk.

The Hornets remain out east over the coming week for games against No. 17 Iowa and Notre Dame before a WAC series next weekend at Chicago State. The Hornets and Hawkeyes will play in Iowa City at 2 p.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday.
