Box Score

RENO, Nev. – Nevada designated hitter Grant Fennell went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs and Cal Stevenson had two hits and drove in two runs to lead Nevada to a 5-0 win over the Hornets on Tuesday in Reno.

Sacramento State (13-10) was shut out for just the third time this season while Nevada (21-4), ranked just outside the top-25 at No. 26 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, won its eighth consecutive game and earned a second win over the Hornets in as many weeks.

Senior Kyle Moses and junior Nathan Lukes each had two hits for the Hornets, with Lukes having now reached base in all 23 Sacramento State games this season. Nevada had just an 8-7 advantage in hits in the game but had four doubles and hit 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

The Wolf Pack took the lead in the second inning after a leadoff double by Bryce Greager and an RBI groundout from Fennell. In the fourth inning Greager again led off with a base hit and would score on a double by Fennell, who came across himself on a two-out knock by Stevenson.

Nevada padded its lead in the sixth inning on another RBI double by Fennell followed by another RBI single by Stevenson to make the score 5-0. The Hornets had men on base in five innings but the Wolf Pack turned three double plays and were able to strand four runners on base.

Sophomore starter Evan McMahan worked six shutout innings to pick up his second win of the year for Nevada, allowing just five hits. Three Wolf Pack relievers allowed just two singles as the four pitchers for the home team did not allow a single walk in the game with three strikeouts.

Hornet freshman relievers Ryan Smith and Austin Root each worked scoreless innings, with Smith lower his season ERA to 1.64 and Root now sporting a 2.57 ERA. Senior Jake Stassi was the first of five Sacramento State pitchers in the game and allowed just one hit and one run over two innings but took the loss.

Sacramento State is back home for a WAC series vs. New Mexico State starting at 3 p.m. Friday at John Smith Field.
