Box Score SAN DIEGO -- Sacramento State sophomore Alina Soltanici's win at No. 1 singles was the decisive point over the University of San Diego as the Hornets won the match 4-3 at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Hornets and Toreros alternated points and were tied 3-3 heading into the final match. Soltanici took on USD's Marta Stojanovich in what amounted to a three-set thriller. Soltanici won the first, before dropping the second set and the Hornet sophomore was pushed to the tiebreak in the third, but won the match, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (1).
It was just Soltanici's fourth three-set match of the season where she is now 2-2.
In doubles play, the Hornet duo of junior Daria Savchenko and freshman Ana Loaiza Esquivias held the advantage early with their 6-4 win over San Diego's Mikayla Morkel-Brink and Carly Naslund at No. 3. However, the Toreros rebounded and took the next two doubles matches to secure the opening point.
To stop the Torero momentum, Savchenko started off singles play with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 to tie the score. This started a four-match streak of each team alternating match wins.
At No. 3 singles, sophomore Deimante Bulatovaite fell to the Torero's Drew Spinosa. Following that up was Loaiza Esquivias' win at No. 5 over Morkel-Brink.
Loaiza Esquivias dropped the first set of her match, but rallied to take the final two to win the match, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. It is Loaiza Esquivias' fourth straight singles victory of the season, the longest for any Hornet this year.
USD quickly regained the lead with a win at No. 2 singles over redshirt freshman Anna-Maria Nau, but junior Olivia Boija was able to keep the match alive for the Hornets with her three-set win at No. 4.
Boija took on the Toreros' Shani Blecher and the pair alternated the first two sets with a win apiece, before Boija pulled ahead in the third to win the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Since losing her first two three-set matches in the first week of the season, the junior has won her last three, all contributing to match victories for Sacramento State.
Boijas win tied the match at three and set up Soltanici's heroics to give Sacramento State the victory. The Hornets are now 8-7 on the season and San Diego fell to 1-6.
Sacramento State will complete their two-match road trip on Sunday against Loyola Marymount at 12 p.m. in Los Angeles.
