Sacramento State improved to 9-12 with the victory while Grand Canyon dropped to 13-12. The Antelopes had already defeated both Penn State and Loyola Marymount prior to the loss against the Hornets.
In today's game, the Hornets scored once in the first inning, four times in the fourth inning, and once more in the fifth to jump out what appeared to be a comfortable 6-0 lead. However, the Antelopes sent 11 batters to the plate in a top of the sixth inning that included seven hits and one Hornet error. In fact, after Grand Valley had cut the lead to 6-5, the team still had the bases loaded with one out, but Hornet starter Celina Matthias was able to work out of the jam and preserve the Hornet lead.
Matthias (4-5) then set down the Antelope side in order in the seventh to earn her fourth win of the season. Matthias went the distance, allowing nine hits and five runs while walking none and striking out five batters. Take away the sixth inning, and Matthias allowed no runs and just two hits.
A Paige Castro RBI-double scoring Paige Martin got the Hornets on the board in the first inning. Sacramento State then scored four times the fourth inning, including three of those runs coming after two outs had been recorded. After Sasha Margulies grounded out to begin the inning, four consecutive Hornets reached safely, including an RBI-single from Kortney Solis which scored Alexa Chattleton. A bases loaded walk to Martin and a two-run single from Zimari Hinton capped the inning.
The Hornets tacked on a huge insurance run in the fifth when a Margulies double to left field scored Castro with what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Six different Sacramento State players had hits, six scored at least one run, and five had at least one RBI. Hinton finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Martin, Castro, Margulies and Solis each had an RBI as well.
For Grand Canyon, Kailey Regester (5-6) picked up the loss, allowing five hits and five runs in four innings of work.
