WOMEN'S HOOPS TOPS BIG SKY STEALS RECORD IN 92-60 ROUT OF PORTLAND ST

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sacramento State forced 38 turnovers with 30 steals, topping the Big Sky record for steals in a game, and outscored Portland State 47-2 in points off turnovers in a 92-60 rout on Saturday night in Portland.

Sacramento State (10-12, 8-3 Big Sky) had tied the conference record with 28 steals in a win over Idaho State on Jan. 15, equaling the record set by Montana State in 2000. The Hornets did two better on Saturday while forcing 38 Viking turnovers. The NCAA record for steals in a game is 38, set by Grambling in 1987.

The 32-point margin of victory was the largest road win for the Hornets since the 1992-93 season, an 86-48 win at Cal State Northridge. It was the largest road Big Sky victory in program history and was the team's third win of more than 30 points in Big Sky play this season.

The Hornets forced Portland State (3-19, 1-10 Big Sky) into 21 turnovers in the first half alone and committed just 11 total turnovers for the game as the Vikings had no points off turnovers until the final minute of play. Six Hornets had multiple steals in the game with senior Fantasia Hilliard and freshman Maranne Johnson equaling the team season-high with seven steals apiece.

In a game that was never really close, Sacramento State sophomore Gretchen Harrigan led four Hornets in double figures with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go with seven rebounds and five steals. Hilliard had 15 points, senior Takara Burse scored 14 with a team-high four assists, and Johnson totaled 11 points while leading the team with three 3-point makes.

Sophomore Margaret Huntington had six points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Hornets, who faced a Portland State team with just seven healthy players. The Hornets outrebounded the Vikings 47-40 with an astounding 32 offensive rebounds (Sacramento State led the NCAA averaging 21 offensive rebounds per game entering the contest). Sacramento State attempted 50 more shots than Portland State, hit 10 threes, and went 14-of-18 from the free throw line.

Portland State opened the game with a 4-0 lead before a 13-0 run put Sacramento State up by nine. The Hornet lead continued to grow from there, with the visitors holding a 27-11 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half. Sacramento State led by as many as 18 points in the first half and was up 42-29 at the intermission.

The Vikings got within a 42-33 deficit early in the second half before a massive 21-3 Hornet run over six and a half minutes, during which Portland State made just one field goal, gave the visitors a 63-36 advantage. Sacramento State took a game-high 37-point lead on a Hilliard layup with 3:04 to play and finished with a 92-60 final.

Sacramento State totaled a 35-14 edge in second chance points and outscored the Vikings 22-2 in fast break points. The Hornet bench also had a 42-7 advantage and, though Portland State did shoot 53.5% for the game, Sacramento State outscored the Vikings 44-38 in points in the paint.

Three Portland State players scored in double figures led by 18 points from Emily Easom. Mikaela Rivard had 17 points but 10 turnovers while teammate Nele Aha had nine turnovers as all seven Vikings that played committed at least two turnovers. Portland State also totaled just five steals in the game.

Sacramento State picked up its fourth Big Sky road win of the season, just one shy of the program single-season record for Big Sky road victories. The Hornets, though, play five of their seven remaining Big Sky games at home after having played just seven total home games and 15 road games so far this year.

With the win Sacramento State remained tied for second place in the Big Sky after North Dakota also moved to 8-3 in conference play with a win earlier Saturday. The Hornets do have a win over UND this year but plays the team again in Grand Forks in two weeks.

The Hornets return home to host Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. Thursday before facing Idaho at 2 p.m. next Saturday in The Nest.
