DAVIS, Calif. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team scored at least 48.000 on all four rotations and finished with a total of 194.150 to tie for second place in a three-team meet at The Pavilion on the UC Davis campus on Friday night. The host Aggies won the meet with a 194.725. The Hornets and Central Michigan tied for second.
Sacramento State began the meet on bars and scored 48.675. The final three in the Hornet order produced the three best scores for the team. Courtney Soliwoda started the run with a 9.750 to tie for ninth place. Kayla Wonderly followed with a 9.775 and finished in a four-way tie for fifth place before Cassie Benning scored 9.800 to claim fourth place.
In the second rotation, the Hornets finished at 48.000 on beam. The five scores counted by the team ranged from 9.450 to 9.675. Julia Konner led the way and finished eighth with a 9.675. Wonderly was second on the team with a 9.650.
Benning led the team on floor with a 9.800 to tie for third place on the event. Konner was close behind with a 9.775 and Dallas Smith added a 9.725 to finish tied for sixth and eighth, respectively. Lauren Rice (9.700) and Jennifer Brenner (9.600) completed the scorers for the team.
Sacramento State concluded the meet on vault with a 48.875. All six scores counted by the team fell between 9700 and 9.825. Caitlin Soliwoda received a career best 9.825 to tie for third in the meet. Soliwoda's previous best was a 9.775 in three different meets. Lauren Rice and Julia Konner each scored 9.800. Rice's score tied her career best. Courtney Soliwoda contributed a 9.750 and Tina Necas added a 9.700 to complete the scorers.
UC Davis' Alexis Brown won the all-around with a total of 39.125. Julia Konner was third with a 38.850 and Lauren Rice was fourth at 38.625.
Sacramento State will next compete at San Jose State on March 8 in a four-team meet which will also include Utah State and Seattle Pacific.
NOTES: The tie was the second of the season for Sacramento State…the Hornets had only two ties since 1992 prior to this season…Iowa was scheduled to compete in the meet but was forced to withdraw after its flights were cancelled due to bad weather…following the meet UC Davis current head coach John Lavallee and former head coach Ray Goldbar honored Hornet head coach Kim Hughes and his wife Darla.
