BASEBALL OUTLASTED BY PORTLAND IN PITCHERS DUEL, 2-0

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In a game that was scoreless into the ninth inning Portland second baseman Kevin Farley came through with a 2-out, 2-run single in the top of the ninth and pitcher Davis Tominaga finished a complete game shutout to give the Pilots a 2-0 win over the Hornets in the finale of a four-game series.

Sacramento State (6-2) had won the first three games of the series as Portland (2-7) earned its first road win of the season.

"This one is going to be hard to get over, but I'm pleased with the way we played all weekend long," head coach Reggie Christiansen said. "Our pitchers were outstanding and today and we just didn't find a way to score a couple runs. I think we've played really well; our two losses (this season) we were in late and we kind of hurt ourselves but I think we're headed in a good direction."

Five Hornet pitchers combined to shut down the Pilots for most of the game as the visitors didn't get their first hit until there was one out in the seventh inning. Sacramento State had seven hits but stranded seven base runners, going 1-for-10 with runners on base and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position in the game.

In the ninth, Pilot first baseman Dan Whittaker reached on a one-out single. On a hit and run the following batter, Michael Lucarelli, hit a line drive that was dropped by Hornet second-baseman Dan Deely, who attempted to tag the bag before Whittaker slid in but the runner was ruled safe and Lucarelli reached at first. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Farley lined a 1-2 pitch into right field to score two.

Tominaga had already surpassed 100 pitches but back came out for the ninth and set the Hornets down in order to complete the shutout. The righty finished with 121 pitches thrown in the game, allowing seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts. He threw 80 strikes among his 121 pitches.

Senior Jake Stassi, a year removed from Tommy John surgery, made his Hornet debut and allowed just one walk over two scoreless innings in a controlled start. Freshman Austin Root and junior Tyler Beardsley followed with two scoreless, hitless innings apiece, and sophomore Chad Perry allowed one hit but tossed a scoreless frame.

Sophomore Justin Dillon pitched the last two innings and allowed two unearned runs on two hits, taking the loss. Stassi walked the first batter of the game but the Hornet pitchers issued no more walks in the contest, finishing with five total strikeouts and allowing just three hits.

Sacramento State's best chances to score came in the fifth and eighth innings. In the fifth freshman Devin Lehman drew a leadoff walk and sophomore Gunner Pollman followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third the Pilots brought the infield in and were able to cut down Lehman at the plate on a groundball to shortstop. With two away Tominaga got a pop out to end the inning.

Deely led off with a single in the eighth, advanced to second on a bunt, and moved to third on a groundout. With the go-ahead run 90 feet away the Pilots elected to intentionally walk junior Nathan Lukes, who hit .533 in the series, and Tominaga froze Chris Lewis on a 1-2 breaking ball for the third out.

Lukes went 2-for-3 on Sunday and was 8-for-15 with three walks, a home run, and four runs scored over the four game series. Pollman also had two hits on Sunday and Lewis went 1-for-4 in the finale and 5-for-13 with two home runs and six RBIs over the weekend. Sophomore Brandon Hunley hit .500 for the series but had to come out of Sunday's game after a fouling a ball off his knee in the second inning.

The Hornets hit the road for the first time this season with a four-game series at Texas Tech Thursday through next Sunday. A College World Series participant last year, the Red Raiders are 8-1 this season and ranked nationally in every poll, coming in at No. 5 in the nation this week in the Baseball America poll.
