HILLIARD'S NEAR TRIPLE-DOUBLE LEADS WOMEN'S HOOPS PAST IDAHO 92-84

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State senior point guard Fantasia Hilliard narrowly missed a triple-double with 22 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists and the Hornets hit 19 three-pointers as a team in a 92-84 win over Idaho.

The win paired with losses by Montana and North Dakota on Saturday puts Sacramento State (11-13, 9-4 Big Sky) alone in second place in the conference standings and just one game behind the league-leading Lady Griz. The Hornets completed a season sweep of Idaho (10-13, 4-8 Big Sky), which made 13 threes themselves on Saturday but couldn't quite keep pace.

Hilliard shot 8-of-13 from the field, 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and 2-of-2 at the line while also contributing two steals and playing 30 minutes - eight more minutes than any other Hornet played. With nine assists she passed former Eastern Washington guard Lisa Comstock into third place in Big Sky history with 651 career assists. She also surpassed former Hornet Terri Lugert into sixth in Sacramento State program history with 1,311 career points.

"We really worked on the stuff that we lacked in Thursday's game and that played a part today," Hilliard said. "I didn't even know (I was close to a triple-double). I felt really good and I was trying to do whatever I can to get a win and keep my team involved. If that's me going in rebounding, me passing the ball, or scoring I'll do all of them."

Sophomore Hallie Gennett was 5-of-10 from 3-point range for 15 points and sophomore Gretchen Harrigan hit a career-high four 3-pointers in just seven attempts and totaled 20 points to lead the Hornet onslaught from long range. The squad was 19-of-49 overall from beyond the arc and shot just below 40% from the field overall.

Idaho shot the ball well and committed a relatively low 24 turnovers against the Hornets' pressure defense. The Hornets jumped out to an 8-2 lead and led by as many as eight points in the first half. Idaho used a 16-8 run over the last five minutes of the half to draw even with 18 seconds to play, but Hilliard hit a buzzer-beating three to put the Hornets up 43-40 at halftime.

After Gennett hit a three to open the second half Idaho went on a 12-1 run to open up a game-high 52-47 lead with 17:12 to play. Over the next 12 minutes Sacramento State went on an incredible run as the Hornets shot 14-of-28 with eight made 3-pointers while Idaho shot just 3-of-19 and had 11 turnovers in a 37-10 Hornet stretch, giving the home team an 84-62 lead with 4:57 to play.

After making just three shots over the 12 minute span the Vandals made eight of their last nine shots of the game, outscoring the Hornets 22-8 to close the contest but coming up eight points short.

"We needed today's win," Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "Idaho is a dangerous team and they shoot the ball with confidence. We shot the ball well from deep and we did a better job on the offensive glass in the second half. It was a good all-around effort and a good win."

The Hornets totaled 16 offensive boards with 10 of them coming in the second half. Idaho had a 50-43 rebounding advantage overall and shot 46.2% from the field and 13-of-26 (50%) from 3-point range, but what killed the Vandals was an 11-of-21 (52.4%) performance from the free throw line.

Sacramento State also had a 24-5 edge in points off turnovers and was 14-11 in second chance points. Idaho senior Stacey Barr, the Big Sky leader in scoring this season, had a game-high 28 points on 10-of-17 from the field and 5-of-8 from 3-point range but committed eight turnovers in the contest. Karlee Wilson had 14 points for the Vandals and the team had two players finish with double-digit rebounds.

The Hornets play their final road games of the regular season next week, facing Northern Colorado on Thursday before a huge matchup with North Dakota next Saturday in Grand Forks.
