SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team set a season high on vault and had 10 individual career bests during the meet but was not able to take down San Jose State in a dual meet on Friday night at The Nest. The Spartans scored 195.125 while the Hornets finished the meet with a 192.850.
Sacramento State began the meet by scoring 48.775 on vault for its season high. Four freshman each recorded their career bests in the event led by a 9.800 from Lauren Rice and 9.775s by Megan Kyle and Caitlin Soliwoda to finish second and tied for third, respectively. Kyle's vault marked her first collegiate competition and her first meet in three seasons. Sophomore Julia Konner scored 9.725 to tie for sixth place and Tina Necas completed the team score with a 9.700. Courtney Soliwoda also contributed a career best 9.650.
The Hornets fell behind for the first time during the second rotation after scoring 48.425 on bars compared to a 48.750 from SJSU on vault. Senior Kayla Wonderly was the highest Sacramento State finisher with a 9.775 to tie for third place. Rice was fifth with a 9.650 and Courtney Soliwoda finished sixth at 9.675.
During the third rotation, the Hornets struggled on beam as the final three gymnasts in the lineup fell. Wonderly led off and scored 9.775 to lead the way. Konner had a career high 9.750 and Dallas Smith scored 9.650. The three falls left the team with a 46.775 during the rotation.
Sacramento State showed resiliency during the final rotation on floor, scoring 48.875. Rice tied her career best with a 9.825 to tie for second overall. Konner matched her career high with a 9.800 to place fourth and Cassie Benning tied for fifth with a 9.800.
NOTES: The Hornets competed without the services of senior Kalliah McCartney and freshman Annie Juarez who were both out due to ankle injuries…counting her exhibition on bars, Konner would have scored 38.975 in the all-around…Sacramento State will next face #7 Nebraska, #13 UCLA and Bridgeport in a four team in Los Angeles on Sat., Feb. 21…the Hornets' final home meet of the season will come against Utah State on Sun., March 15, at 2 p.m.
