Box Score BERKELEY, Calif. - Sacramento State shattered its own NCAA Div. I record with 80 3-point attempts and broke the Big Sky record with 111 field goal attempts in a 117-99 loss to No. 17 California on the final day of the Cal Classic in Berkeley.
Sacramento State (1-5) made 20 3-pointers, just two shy of the NCAA record, while scoring a season-high 99 points. The 80 3-point attempts were 22 more than any team had ever previously attempted in a Div. I game, as the Hornets had set the previous record at 58 attempts last season at San Diego State. Big Sky team North Dakota has attemtped 70 total 3-pointers in six games this season.
The 111 attempted field goals broke the program and Big Sky record of 104 field goal attempts the team had last year at San Jose State. It was just seven shots shy of the NCAA single-game record. The 216 combined points scored was also a record high for a Big Sky team in league history.
"We took a huge step forward today and played true to our system, doing a lot of good things" Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "We've been somewhat timid in terms of letting the ball fly and today we really attacked. We played a team that is incredibly long and incredibly athletic and we didn't back down. We played fearless and a lot of good things happened as a result."
No. 17 California (6-2) was willing to run with the Hornets after Villanova used a slow pace to limit the Hornets to just 65 total shots and 22 3-point attempts when those teams met on Saturday. Cal broke program records for points and field goal percentage on Sunday, shooting above 70% for most of the game before finishing at 69.3%.
California scored 82 of its 117 points in the paint, using its massive size advantage to convert 41 layups. The Bears used seven players that stand 6-2 or taller; the tallest Hornet that played on Sunday was 6-0 forward Margaret Huntington.
Hornet sophomore Taylor Brown had a career-best game, scoring a team-high 17 points while knocking down five 3-pointers in just 18 minutes played. Huntington shot 6-of-9 form the field with 13 points and three steals and senior Adella Randle-El (15 points), sophomore Maranne Johnson (14), and junior Brianna Burgos (11) also scored in double figures.
Cal 6-4 freshman Kristine Anigwe scored 43 points in the game, the most any player has scored in an NCAA Div. I game this season. She also had 12 rebounds in just 24 minutes played while five other Bears scored in double figures with Mikayla Cowling narrowly missing a triple-double with 11 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds.
The Golden Bears led for most of the game, jumping to an early 13-3 lead. It was just a 19-16 Cal advantage with four minutes left in the first quarter before a 13-0 run blew the game open. Cal led 34-18 at the end of the first quarter and 68-49 at halftime after totaling just 63 points for the entire game in its loss on Saturday to Saint Mary's.
Cal's lead reached 30 points at 105-75 with eight and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the Hornets kept fighting and went on a 23-10 run to get within a 17-point deficit in the final minute of the game.
The 20 made threes for the Hornets were just one shy of the program and Big Sky record and were two more than any other Div. I team has made this season. The 111 field goal attempts by the Hornets were 11 more than any other team has had this year.
To get that many shots up the Hornets had to be strong on the glass, pulling in 29 total offensive rebounds. While Cal had a 55-43 rebounding edge overall the Hornets forced 26 turnovers and outscored the Bears 29-20 in second chance points and 24-13 in points off turnovers.
By comparison Cal attempted just two 3-point shots in the game, making one. The Bears held the Hornets to 28.8% shooting in the first half but Sacramento State shot 36.5% in the second half, outscoring Cal 50-49 over the final two periods with a 24-19 edge in the fourth quarter.
The 117 points scored by Cal tied for the second most opponent points in a game in Hornet program history and were just three points shy of the record. The 99 points scored by Sacramento State were 45 more than the team scored on Saturday.
Johnson was named to the Cal Classic all-Tournament team after scoring a career-high 22 points on Saturday before 14 points on Sunday. She made six 3-pointers over the two games, averaging 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game for the tournament.
The Hornets return to action next Sunday with a Causeway Cup matchup at UC Davis at 2 p.m.
