Box Score SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sacramento State forced 35 Cal Poly turnovers but shot just 22% overall and 15% from 3-point range in a 97-72 loss on Tuesday night at Cal Poly.
Sacramento State (3-8) had its worst shooting night in the three-year tenure of coach Bunky Harkleroad, recording its lowest field goal and 3-point percentages by a wide margin. The Hornets were 4-of-46 (8.7%) from 3-point range through the first three quarters before making 5-of-14 from beyond the arc in the final quarter. Cal Poly (7-6) led 50-28 at halftime and by as many as 35 points in the second half.
The Hornets did get up 60 3-point shots, the second most ever attempted in a Div. I women's basketball game, but struggled throughout, going 1-of-10 in the first quarter, 1-of-18 in the second quarter, and 2-of-18 in the third. The visitors scored just 42 points through the first three quarters before tallying 30 in the fourth with the game in hand for Cal Poly.
Sacramento State had an early 6-4 lead but was outscored 22-5 over the last seven minutes of the first quarter, shooting just 4-of-24 (16%) overall in the opening period. The Mustangs led by double figures for the remainder of the game, going up by as many as 35 points at 79-44 with 7:12 to play before the Hornets outscored them 28-18 over the remainder of the contest.
The 35 turnovers forced by the Hornets came after the team forced an NCAA season high 38 turnovers by UC Irvine last Tuesday. Sacramento State hit 17 3-pointers and shot 49% in its 126-78 rout of UC Irvine in its last game but the strong shooting did not continue on Tuesday.
Senior Adella Randle-El led the Hornets with 13 points on Tuesday, shooting 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Sacramento State shot a decent 21-of-32 (66%) from the free throw line in the game but was outrebounded 74-48 and was outscored 26-11 in second chance points despite 22 offensive rebounds.
Sophomore Maranne Johnson, who earlier Tuesday was named Big Sky Player of the Week for the second time this season, had 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists to record her seventh straight double-digit scoring game. Junior Brianna Burgos hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points while senior Sydonia Daniels had her best game as a Hornet tallying seven points, seven rebounds, three blocks, and two steals shooting 3-of-6 and not committing a turnover in a career-high 18 minutes played.
Cal Poly shot 52% for the game and had four players score in double figures with junior Hannah Gilbert tallying 23 points and 17 rebounds. Dynn Leaupepe also had a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds and her twin sister Lynn Leaupepe poured in 15 points with nine boards.
Sacramento State opens Big Sky play with three straight home games, opening the league schedule hosting Portland State at 12:05 p.m. Saturday in The Nest.
