Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State used a late 7-0 run to get within a point of Hawaii but could not convert a layup and had a last-second 3-point attempt blocked as the Rainbow Wahine hung on for a 74-72 win on Sunday in The Nest.
Sophomore Maranne Johnson hit a jumper with one minute left in the game to bring the Hornets to a 73-72 deficit. Junior Ashlyn Crenshaw came up with a steal on the other end but senior Sydonia Daniels was unable to finish underneath with 14 seconds left on the clock.
After a Hornet foul Hawaii made one of two free throws and the Hornets were able to call timeout and advance the ball to midcourt with three seconds left. Crenshaw took the inbounds pass but her 3-point attempt was blocked by Hawaii senior Ashleigh Karaitiana to end the game.
Sacramento State (2-7) shot a season-low 27.5% from the field and made just seven threes in the contest, also a season low. The Hornets did force 34 turnovers but Hawaii (5-5) shot 51% and had a 52-28 rebounding advantage.
The Hornets trailed most of the game but never got down by more than nine points. Sacramento State shot just 20.0% in the first quarter and 25.0% in the second quarter while making only three 3-pointers, but the home team shot 16-of-19 from the free throw line in the first half and actually led 37-36 at the intermission.
Sacramento State held a game-high three point lead two minutes into the third quarter before a 12-0 Hawaii run over the next five minutes but the Wahine up 50-41. The Hornets scored the last seven points of the quarter, however and trailed just 52-50 going to the fourth.
Hawaii led 73-65 with less than three minutes to play before junior Brianna Burgos hit a three and Johnson made two free throws and a baseline jumper to make it a one-point game. The Hornets had a couple of chances to regain the lead but Hawaii was able to finish off the win.
After shooting just 14-of-24 from the free throw line on Friday the Hornets were a season-best 27-of-31 (87.1%) from the line on Sunday. The 27 makes equaled the most free throws the team has made since 2011. Johnson was 6-of-6 at the line while Burgos, Crenshaw, and junior Gretchen Harrigan all were 4-for-4.
Crenshaw scored a game-high 16 points shooting 5-of-9 from the field and had a team-high seven rebounds. Burgos finished with 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting and had three assists and Johnson had 10 points and four assists for her fifth straight double-digit scoring game.
The Hornets had a 29-9 advantage in points off turnovers but second chance points - usually another stat that the Hornets dominate - were 19-7 in favor of Hawaii. Sacramento State had 13 offensive rebounds but the Wahine had 12 of their own.
Hawaii entered the game ranked last in all of NCAA Div. I shooting just 20.3% from 3-point range but the team went 5-of-12 (41.7%) from beyond the arc on Sunday. Sophomore Megan Huff led UH with 16 points and seven rebounds, shooting 7-of-8, while Karaitiana had 14 points, five rebounds, and three blocks and senior Destiny King had nine points and nine rebounds.
Sacramento State concludes a stretch of three home games in five days facing another Big West team, UC Irvine, at 2:05 p.m. Tuesday in The Nest. The Anteaters are 3-8 after a 79-58 loss at San Jose State on Sunday.
