Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Hosting a ranked team for the first time since 1994 and a Pac-12 team for the first time since 2000, Sacramento State trailed by just eight points in the final minutes of the first half but No. 19 UCLA pulled away in the second half for a 109-76 win Friday night in The Nest.
"UCLA is a very good basketball team and they have a great point guard and kids that can shoot the ball," Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "They are a very skilled, athletic basketball team. They did a great job guarding us and we had a lot of unforced errors, missed free throws, and didn't rebound like we have been."
UCLA (7-2), ranked No. 19 in the latest AP top-25 poll, used its size and strength to overpower the Hornets both offensively and defensively. Sacramento State (2-6) attempted just 11 3-pointers in the second half and did not make one, marking the first time the Hornets did not make a 3-pointer in a half in the three-year tenure of Harkleroad.
The game was the first of three home games in a five day stretch for Sacramento State, which hosts Hawaii at 5:05 p.m. Sunday and UC Irvine at 2:05 p.m. on Tuesday. Friday's loss was just the team's second home loss by more than eight points in the last three years.
UCLA jumped to a huge lead early, holding the Hornets scoreless for more than five and a half minutes with an 18-0 run to take a 22-5 lead. Sacramento State started the game shooting 2-of-18 from the field with a stretch of 13 consecutive missed shots.
Trailing 30-16 one minute into the second quarter, Sacramento State went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to get within a four point deficit at 30-26. That was as close as the Hornets got, and though the team was even with UCLA 25-25 in the second quarter the Bruins led by 12 points at the intermission.
Over the last minute of the second quarter and the first two minutes of the third quarter UCLA had a 10-0 run to open up a 20-point lead. The visitors led by at least 19 for the remainder of the third quarter and by more than 20 points for the entire fourth quarter.
Hornet sophomore Maranne Johnson had her third 20-point game of the season, finishing with 20 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Junior Gretchen Harrigan shot 3-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 at the line for 12 points while senior Sydonia Daniels equaled her career high with seven points. Junior Brianna Burgos struggled shooting the ball but had career-highs of six assists and five rebounds.
The Bruins shot 62.9% for the game scoring 72 points in the paint. UCLA was just 3-of-12 from 3-point range but went 18-of-21 at the free throw line and had a 58-33 rebounding advantage with 13 offensive boards.
Sacramento State shot a season-low 30.3% from the field, shooting below 25% in two quarters. The Hornets hit eight 3-pointers in the first half before not making one in the second half, finishing 8-of-39 from 3-point range (20.5%), also a season low. The team struggled at the line as well going 14-of-24.
The Hornets did force 26 turnovers with 15 steals for a 23-16 advantage in points off turnovers. The home team had 19 offensive rebounds as well but had just a 15-13 edge in second chance points.
The Bruins had five players in double-figures with 22 points and seven rebounds from Nirra Fields and 20 points and seven rebounds from Monique Billings. Kacy Swain had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Jordin Canada had 16 points and seven assists.
