Box Score ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico jumped ahead early and never trailed again, leading the game for nearly 38 minutes and going up by as many as 18 points late in an 84-71 win over the Hornets on Saturday in The Pit.
Sacramento State (1-2) concluded its season-opening three game road trip with the loss after having beaten another Mountain West team, Utah State, on the road last week. Perennially one of the hardest teams to beat in the nation on its home floor, New Mexico (2-1) picked up its second home win of the year in front of 5,178 fans on Saturday.
The Hornets created plenty of scoring chances as they always do, grabbing 20 offensive rebounds and forcing 26 turnovers, but struggled shooting the ball. The team shot just 22-of-71 (31%) from the field, a season-low. The Hornets made a season-high 12 three-pointers, but shot just 26% from 3-point range.
Senior Adella Randle-El scored a team-high 20 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the free throw line, and had a team season-high seven steals in 25 minutes played. Junior Ashlyn Crenshaw shot 6-of-7 from the field for 13 points and sophomore Abbey Goodsell shot 3-of-6 from 3-point range for a career-best nine points.
Sacramento State was outrebounded for the first time this season, 43-36, but grabbed 20 offensive boards. New Mexico had 11 offensive rebounds and outscored the Hornets 17-11 in second chance points. The visitors scored 33 points off 26 Lobo turnovers with 14 steals.
Four Lobos scored in double figures with Khadijah Shumpert recording a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds on 9-of-13 shooting and Cherise Beynon had 13 points and nine assists. The Lobos shot 57% for the game and were 4-of-8 from 3-point range. New Mexico scored 56 points in the paint with 31 fast break points.
The game was tied 6-6 with seven minutes left in the first quarter before New Mexico got the next two baskets and never trailed again, leading 25-16 at the end of the first. The Hornets had a strong second quarter to get to as close as one point back at 32-31, but went scoreless for the last four minute of the quarter to go into halftime trailing 39-33.
The Hornets got no closer than a five-point deficit in the second half, with New Mexico going ahead 76-58 with 4:29 to play. The Hornets used a 12-2 run to get back within a 78-70 margin in the final minute but got no closer.
