WOMEN'S SOCCER SCORES TWICE BUT FALLS AT WEBER STATE 4-2

Box Score

OGDEN, Utah – Juniors Lydia Bowman and Regan Smithers each scored in the second half for the Hornets but Weber State led 2-0 at the intermission and held leads of 3-0 and 4-1 before completing a 4-2 win on Friday in Ogden.

Sacramento State (4-9-0, 2-3-0 Big Sky) was playing the third of four consecutive Big Sky games on the road as Weber State (6-7-1, 2-3-0 Big Sky) picked up its first home win of the season.

Bowman got the Hornets on the board in the 52nd minute. Sophomore Kayla Collins sent a cross from near the corner and Bowman chipped the feed over Weber State goalkeeper Sydnie Brough for her first goal of the season.

Weber State responded with a goal by Chansi Crompton in the 65th minute on a strike to far post off a give-and-go. With the score 4-1 in the final minute of play, the Wildcats were whistled for a foul in the box and Smithers converted the penalty kick inside the left post.

Sacramento State had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks for the game, the first time this season that the Hornets did not allow an opponent corner kick. The Hornets also had an 18-16 advantage in shots but the Wildcats were 8-7 in shots on goal.

Weber State held the Hornets without a shot until the 20th minute and did not cede a single Hornet shot on goal in the first half, though junior Alexa Heinzer had a try hit the crossbar in the 43rd minute.

Weber State took a 1-0 lead just three minutes in as Madison Garlock sent a cross to Morgan Quarnberg for a tap in inside the left post. The home team doubled its lead in the 33rd minute when Garlock sent a pass from just beyond midfield to the top of the box and connected with Stacy Blair, who fired a low shot inside the far post.

Junior Jennifer Lum nearly got the Hornets on the board early in the second half when her shot from inside the box hit the crossbar in the 48th minute. Just over two minutes later Blair scored again off a scramble atop the Hornet box. Bowman's goal came two minutes later but the Hornets were unable to get closer than a two-goal deficit.

The Hornets totaled seven shots on goal in the second half after having none in the first half. Lum led the squad with four shots in the game while Bowman and Smithers each had two on goal. Blair recorded the brace with seven total shots in the game with four on goal.

The late PK attempt was the first the Hornets have been awarded this season and was the first penalty kick goal for the team since Bowman converted one against Fresno State last September. Sacramento State has not missed a penalty kick since the 2010 season.

Sacramento State concludes its season-long four game road trip at 11 a.m. Sunday at Idaho State. The Bengals dropped their eighth consecutive game and fell to 1-12-1 overall and 0-5-0 in the Big Sky with a 4-1 loss on Friday at Portland State.
