Box Score CHENEY, Wash. -- Sacramento State hit just .170 and committed a season-high 15 service errors on the way to a 3-1 loss (25-21, 25-16, 14-25, 25-19) to Eastern Washington in a Big Sky Conference volleyball matchup Thursday evening at Reese Court.
The Hornets had four service errors in the first set, two in the second, four in the third, and five more in the fourth set, constantly giving Eastern Washington easy points. In fact, four of the Eagles' first 11 points of the fourth set were gained via service error. The 15 miscues were easily a season high, surpassing the previous high of 12, set at Campbell on Sept. 5. In addition, the Hornets hit .170, the third lowest percentage of the season. That included 44 kills with 20 errors in 141 total attacks.
Sacramento State had just one less kill than Eastern Washington (44-45) and one more team block (11-10), but the Eagles had just six service errors and outdug the Hornets, 65-53.
With the loss, the Hornets dropped to 16-4 overall and 3-2 in the Big Sky. The Hornets are 1-2 on their four-match road trip that wraps up on Saturday evening at Idaho. Meanwhile, Eastern Washington (10-6, 5-0) remains one of just two Big Sky teams still undefeated in league play (Idaho State is the other), and the Eagles have won six straight after starting the season with a 4-6 record.
Sacramento State is now 31-17 all-time against Eastern Washington, but just 10-12 when the two teams play in Cheney.
None of the four sets were very close, although it did appear Sacramento State had the Eagles on the ropes in the fourth set. The Hornets jumped out to a 12-10 lead despite committing three service errors, but the momentum began to shift after a fourth service error drew the Eagles back within, 12-11. That fourth miscue began a 6-0 run that allowed the Eagles to take control of the set and eventually win the match.
Sacramento State hit .409 in the third set, but just .160, .030 and .167, respectively, in their losing frames.
The Hornets were led by Lauren Kissell's 14 kills as the senior outside hitter has now led the team in that category on 12 occasions this year. She was joined in double figures by Morgan Stanley (10 kills, 12 digs) and Lovett (10 kills). The double-double for Stanley was her second of the season. No other Hornet had more than five kills.
Setter Kennedy Kurtz (10), libero Lexie Skalbeck (11), Julia Wright (10) and Stanley were the four Hornets with at least 10 digs. Kurtz (3), Skalbeck (2) and Stanley (2) combined for seven of the team's nine aces. Madeline Cannon had a match-high five blocks (three solos) and Courtney Dietrich added four stuffs (two solos).
Eastern Washington was led by Ana Jakovljevic's 16 kills, 11 digs and .351 hitting percentage while Ryann Ensrud led all players with 21 digs. Eastern Washington hit .228 as a team.
Hornet outside hitter Shannon Boyle missed her fifth straight match tonight because of a back injury. The sophomore remains second on the team in digs per set (3.04) and third in kills (2.11).
