MEN'S SOCCER EARNS 1-0 CAUSEWAY CUP WIN OVER UC DAVIS

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State got a goal from redshirt freshman Brad Bumgarner in the ninth minute and the Hornets limited UC Davis to just three shots on goal in a 1-0 shutout on Saturday at Hornet Field.

The win keeps Sacramento State (6-8-2, 3-4-1 Big West) alive in the hunt for a berth in the Big West tournament, moving just one point behind UC Davis (7-8-2, 3-3-2 Big West) for third place in the Big West with two games remaining in the regular season.

"I'm really proud of my team today," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "I thought we did a lot better with their strength in the air and set pieces. Our guys did really well with it today after it was something we really struggled with against them last week. We live for another day and I couldn't be more proud of my guys."

In addition to moving to 10 points, just one behind UC Davis, the Hornets also earned the tiebreaker with the Aggies should the teams finish tied in the final Big West standings. UC Santa Barbara (15 points) and Cal Poly (14) face off tonight before the Hornets will face both of those teams again next week.

Sophomore James Del Curto made three saves for his second shutout of the year, and his biggest save came just one minute and 50 seconds into the game. UC Davis was awarded a penalty kick off a Hornet foul in the box and Del Curto denied Lucas Mohageg on the PK with a diving stop to his right.

The first Hornet shot on goal in the contest turned out to be the only goal in the game. Senior Cesar Mendoza sent a long ball into the right side of the UC Davis box and found Bumgarner for a dribble and a low finish to the far post for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Each team had just two shots on goal in the first half and just one apiece in the second half. The Hornets had several opportunities to find an insurance goal in the second period but could not add on. The Aggies had a lot of possession in the Hornet half in the late stages of the contest but were not permitted any great looks on goal.

The final shot count was 12-11 UC Davis and the Aggies had four corner kicks without allowing one for the Hornets. Bumgarner, senior Isaac Flores, and sophomore Cylus Sandoval each had two shots for the Hornets while Kristian Heptner led all players with four shots for UC Davis with two of his team's three shots on goal.

The Hornets won their season series against UC Davis for the second consecutive year with a 1-0-1 record. The win also added 2.50 points to Sacramento State's total in the all-sport season long Causeway Cup. Sacramento State and UC Davis are now even at 8.75 points apiece through five meetings between the schools.

In the final week of the regular season Sacramento State plays at UC Santa Barbara Wednesday night and hosts Cal Poly next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hornet Field.
