CORVALLIS, Ore. — Sacramento State sophomore
Zach Looney scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 60th minute on Wednesday night to break up the shutout, but No. 21 Oregon State proved to be too much for the Hornets at home as the Beavers posted an 8-1 win at Paul Lorenz Field.
Sacramento State moved to 4-9-2 overall with the result, playing in its final Big West/Pac-12 crossover match of the year. A week after suffering back-to-back defeats, nationally ranked Oregon State rebounded and improved to 8-3-4 overall.
A takeaway by the Hornets in the Beavers' defensive third started the sequence for Looney, who took the ball to the left side before laying off a pass to teammate
Ronan Rattigan near the top of the 18. Rattigan, with a defender closing in, took a touch and poked a pass behind the Oregon State defense, catching Looney on the run.
The sophomore danced past one defender, ducked inside another, and then chipped a shot to the right side from inside the six-yard box to make it a 3-1 contest at that point.
Looney, who entered the night with two career assists — including one last week in a win over UC San Diego — became the seventh different goal scorer for Sacramento State this season, while Rattigan collected his third helper of the year to move him into a tie for second on the team in that category along with
Hiroshi Yang and
Eli Reyneveld.
Oregon State scored three times in the first 22 minutes, then added the remainder of its scores following Looney's score early in the second half.
Sacramento State remains on the road and closes out its final roadtrip of the 2026 season at Big West rival CSUN on Saturday (Oct. 24) at 7 p.m.
