RECORDS FALL AS VOLLEYBALL CRUSHES MONTANA STATE 25-15, 25-7, 25-12

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State set the program single-match record with a .467 hitting percentage while junior Courtney Dietrich posted her own school record as the Hornets crushed Montana State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-7, 25-12) in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match Thursday evening at Colberg Court.

The Hornets had 52 kills with just nine errors in 92 attacks, easily surpassing the previous school record of .452, set at home against Idaho State on Nov. 11, 2004. Making the 52 kills and .467 hitting percentage even more impressive is Montana State was limited to just 15 kills and a .038 hitting percentage.

Dietrich was unstoppable tonight as the middle blocker finished with eight kills in eight swings. She becomes just the second Hornet in school history (minimum 7 kills) to finish with a 1.000 hitting percentage. Setter Lisa Beauchene also had eight kills in eight swings against Arkansas-Little Rock on Sept. 8, 2001. Dietrich had three kills in the first set, two more in the second, and three in the third.

Fellow middle blocker Madeline Cannon also had an incredible match, finishing with 10 kills, three blocks and a career-high .750 hitting percentage. That hitting percentage is tied for the ninth best mark in school history as Cannon had 10 kills with just one error in 12 swings. Just five days ago, she hit .737 against Portland State, and is now hitting .418 in nine home matches this season.

Other Hornets with large hitting percentages included Morgan Stanley (.435, 12 kills, 6 digs), Lauren Kissell (.364, 11 kills) and Sloan Lovett (.304, 9 kills, 2 aces). Setter Kennedy Kurtz finished with 40 assists, eight digs and a match-high three aces, and libero Lexie Skalbeck had 20 digs despite the match lasting just three sets. Skalbeck put on a clinic in the third set, finishing the frame with 10 digs.

The victory improved the Hornets to 19-5 overall, 6-3 in the Big Sky, and 3-0 on the current four-match homestand, which includes a Saturday afternoon tilt with Montana. Sacramento State is now 8-1 at home this season, including a 5-0 mark against conference competition.

The Hornets' 19-5 record is the best after 24 matches since the 2007 squad was 21-3. In addition, Sacramento State is now just one victory shy of its first 20-win season since 2007, and its 28th in program history. The Hornets continued their dominance of Montana State, improving to 42-6 all-time against the Bobcats, including a 23-1 mark when the two teams play in Sacramento.

With the loss, the Bobcats dropped to 3-14 overall and 1-8 in the Big Sky. In the process, MSU lost for the seventh time in a row.

"Both our middles Maddie and Courtney were very quick and aggressive tonight," Sacramento State head coach Ruben Volta said. "When we pass well, which we did tonight, we can run our middles really well. Our offense was clicking, and our defense was very good, especially Lexie Skalbeck. Also, Kennedy (Kurtz) did a great job of setting, moving the ball around and getting everyone involved."

Not only did the Hornets hold sizeable advantages over Montana State in kills (52-14), the Hornets also posted more assists (46-14), aces (7-2), digs (49-29) and team blocks (7.0-5.0). The match was over in just one hour and nine minutes, and the Bobcats' largest lead of the night was two points.

The Hornets' 25-7 win in the second set was their biggest blowout frame of the season, surpassing a 25-8 score in the third set of a home win against CSU Bakersfield on Sept. 1. After hitting .243 in the first set, Sacramento State hit .552 and a robust .692 in the second and third sets, respectively.

No Montana State player had more than four kills, and the highest hitting percentage for a Bobcat with more than one kill was Natalie Passeck's four kills and .136 hitting percentage.

The Hornets conclude their four-match homestand on Saturday at 1 p.m. vs. Montana. After Saturday, Sacramento State has just two home matches remaining on the schedule, as four of the final six contests of the year will come on the road. That stretch begins next week on the road at North Dakota and Portland State.
