WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATED AT EASTERN WASHINGTON

Box Score

CHENEY, Wash. - Redshirt junior Alyssa Anderson scored her first goal of the season in the 88th minute but Eastern Washington built an early 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-1 win on Friday afternoon.

Anderson, who scored a team-high seven goals two years ago before missing the 2014 season due to injury, scored her first goal since Oct. 4, 2013, finishing low to the far post on a break on goal after a lead pass from junior Jennifer Lum.

It wasn't enough for the Hornets, as Eastern Washington (9-1-1, 3-0-0 Big Sky) led 3-0 at the half-hour mark en route to its seventh consecutive win. Sacramento State (4-7-0, 2-1-0 Big Sky) took its first Big Sky loss after two conference wins at home last week.

The Eagles totaled 13 shots in the first half and found the back of the net three times. Eastern Washington took the lead in the 18th minute when sophomore Chloe Williams found sophomore Savannah Hoekstra for a shot into the Hornet goal.

Williams and Hoekstra hooked up again six minutes later as Williams sent a long through ball that Hoekstra finished on a shot to the far post. Eastern Washington made the score 3-0 in the 30th minute when Williams rebounded a shot off the crossbar for her Big Sky-leading ninth goal of the season.

Sacramento State had a 10-8 edge in shots in second half but could not score until the final minutes. Hornet redshirt freshman goalkeeper Destiny Butcher did her part in keeping the deficit at three as a lunging stop to her right on a penalty kick in the 76th minute was one of her seven saves in the game.

Outside of the goal from Anderson the Hornets had just two other shots on goal in the game, both off the foot of Lum and stopped by EWU goalkeeper Mallory Taylor. The Hornet goal was actually scored against Eagle backup keeper Sasha Holt, who entered the game in the 87th minute.

Anderson had five total shots in the game and Lum had three. For the Eagles, Williams had a game-high eight shots and now has a league-high 22 points this year. Both Williams and Hoekstra scored on their only shots on goal in the game.

The Hornets move on to play at Idaho on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Vandals improved to a 3-0 in Big Sky play and 7-4-1 overall with a 1-0 win over Portland State on Friday.
