Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Madeline Cannon (15, .737), Lauren Kissell (12, .375) and Sloan Lovett (12, .355) each had at least 12 kills and hit better than .350 to lead Sacramento State to a three-set sweep of Portland State on Saturday evening at Colberg Court. Set scores were 25-14, 25-23, 25-21.
Cannon was incredible, as the junior middle blocker tied her career high in kills, and the hitting percentage was her career best. In fact, the .737 hitting percentage tied for the ninth best single-match performance in the Hornets' Div. I era (1991-pres.). She finished with 15 kills and just one error in 19 total swings. Making the 15 kills even more impressive is she accomplished the feat in just three sets.
In addition, junior libero Lexie Skalbeck finished with a team-high 11 digs, and in the process, recorded her 1,000th career dig.
With the victory, Sacramento State improved its home record to 7-1, including 4-0 against Big Sky opposition. The Hornets, who are 18-5 overall and 5-3 in league play, have their most overall victories since the 2007 squad finished with a 29-8 record. In addition, Sacramento State has more than doubled its total win total from all of last season when the team finished 8-23.
The Hornets are in the midst of a four-match homestand that included a 3-1 victory over Northern Colorado on Thursday, and will see the team play both Montana State and Montana next week. The second longest series in Sacramento State program history, the Hornets improved to 39-22 all-time against Portland State, including a 19-4 mark when playing in Sacramento.
Portland State, which swept North Dakota at home two days ago, dropped to 6-14 and 2-6 in the Big Sky. The Vikings are now 1-7 on the road.
After winning the first set easily, Sacramento State had to overcome an 18-15 deficit in the second set. With the score eventually tied at 23-23, the Hornets got a kill from freshman Brie Gathright and a service ace from Kennedy Kurtz, respectively, to win the frame. In the third set, Portland State got within, 22-20, of Sacramento State's lead before the Hornets got a PSU attack error and a pair of kills from Kissell to end the set and the match.
Sacramento State hit .380 as a team, the third highest hitting percentage of the season. The Hornets are now hitting .303 at home, and six of the seven wins inside the friendly confines have come in four sets or less. In addition, Sacramento State had 51 kills despite the match lasting just three sets, and Kurtz had 46 assists, or an average of 15.33 per set. The Hornets also had six aces (two from Cannon) and Portland State finished with just 2.0 team blocks.
"I was really happy the way we started the match passing well and playing good defense," Sacramento State head coach Ruben Volta said. "Kennedy (Kurtz) did a nice job distributing the ball and running our offense with a variety of players. Maddie Cannon was incredible tonight, she was aggressive and attacked very fast with a variety of shots.
"Its always good to be home, and our players really enjoy it. We've got something special going here with all the student-athletes from other teams that come out and support us and create a good environment."
The outside hitter combination of Lovett and Kissell were deadly again tonight as the seniors combined for 24 kills and both hit well above .300. Kissell had 12 kills, five digs and a .375 hitting percentage while Lovett had 12 kills and a .355 hitting percentage. Morgan Stanley had five kills, seven digs and a match-high four blocks, Courtney Dietrich had four kills and three blocks, and Kurtz had six digs, an ace, two kills and a .500 hitting percentage to go along with her 46 assists. The sophomore setter is now hitting a robust .467 this season with 50 kills and just eight errors in 90 total attacks.
For Portland State, Jenna Mullen had 13 kills and a .310 hitting percentage while Katy Wilson had five kills and a .556 hitting percentage. The Vikings hit .238 as a team.
Sacramento State resumes the homestand next week when the team hosts Montana State on Thursday at 7 p.m., and Montana on Saturday at 1 p.m.
