WOMEN'S SOCCER PICKS UP 3-2 BIG SKY WIN AT IDAHO STATE

Box Score

POCATELLO, Idaho – Juniors Kassidy Kellogg, Rachel Leonard, and Adaurie Dayak scored for Sacramento State in a 3-2 Big Sky victory at Idaho State on Sunday in Pocatello.

Completing a season-long four-game road trip, Sacramento State (5-9-0, 3-3-0 Big Sky) evened its conference record with three of its last four regular season games to be played on Hornet Field. Idaho State (1-13-1, 0-6-0 Big Sky) remained winless in Big Sky play and has now lost nine consecutive games.

With the win the Hornets are now tied for fourth place in the Big Sky with three weeks remaining in the regular season. The top six teams in the final league standings qualify for the Big Sky Tournament, and with three of their last four games at home the win on Sunday put Sacramento State in a strong position to reach the conference tournament.

On Sunday Sacramento State took a 2-0 lead into halftime with the pair of goals coming in a one minute and nine second span. The Hornets took the lead in the 28th minute as junior Jennifer Lum connected with Kellogg for her first goal of the season.

In the 29th minute, Idaho State was whistled for a foul and off the free kick sophomore Kayla Collins fed Leonard for a high shot over the goalie from straight away. Dayak also hit the crossbar with a shot in the first half as the Hornets held an 11-7 shot advantage in the opening period.

Idaho State came out firing in the second half and got one goal back in the 49th minute when sophomore Maria Sanchez, the Big Sky's leading score and ranked in the top five in the nation in goals this season, found the top right corner on a shot across the goal.

The Hornets responded with Dayak's goal in the 61st minute as the Hornet forward dribbled up the left side of the field and rolled a shot inside the right post. With her fourth goal of the season Dayak equaled Collins for the team lead in goals this year.

The Bengals hit the crossbar on consecutive shots in the 69th minute and made it a one-goal game again in the 77th minute when the home team was awarded a penalty kick and Sanchez buried the shot for her 15th goal of the season.

Sacramento State did not allow another Idaho State shot over the last 13 minutes of the contest to complete the win despite the Bengals placing seven shots on goal in the final period and outshooting the Hornets 13-5 overall.

Redshirt freshman Destiny Butcher earned the win with three saves in a perfect first half before being removed due to injury. Junior Molly McConnell made her Hornet debut in the second half and finished with five saves. Lum had a team-high three shots for the Hornets while Sanchez took 10 shots, placing seven on goal for the Bengals.

In a very physical game Idaho State committed 18 fouls, the most against the Hornets in any game this season, while Sacramento State was whistled for 14 fouls. The Bengals had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Hornets host two games next week, facing Northern Colorado at 3:30 p.m. Friday and North Dakota at 10:30 a.m. next Sunday.
