GYMNASTICS SCORES SEASON HIGH 194.250 IN LOSS TO CAL

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team scored a season-high but it was not enough as No. 14 Cal swept all four individual event titles and the all-around in a 194.875-194.250 victory over the Hornets on Friday night at The Nest.

The Hornets opened the meet on vault where they scored 48.675. The final five members of the lineup each scored 9.675 or higher led by freshman Annie Juarez who received a 9.825 to finish fifth in the meet. Fellow freshmen Caitlin Soliwoda and Lauren Rice added 9.775 and 9.750, respectively. As a team, the Hornets were just .025 behind the Golden Bears at the end of the rotation as Cal scored 48.700 on bars.

Cal pulled away during the second rotation with the help of a 49.200 on vault compared to Sacramento State's 48.200 on bars. Kalliah McCartney scored 9.725 to pace the Hornets and finished fifth in the meet. Cassie Benning and Rice each tallied a 9.700 to tie for sixth place.

On beam, junior Alyssa Anderson and McCartney anchored the Sacramento State lineup with a pair of 9.800s. The score tied the pair for second place overall and was a career high for Anderson. Rice chipped in a 9.750 as the Hornets did not have a fall during the rotation.

Sacramento State made a late charge during the fourth rotation after scoring 48.675 on floor compared to a 48.175 on beam by Cal. Benning led the way with a 9.825 to finish second in the event and tie her career high. Rice (9.775) tied for third overall and Dallas Smith (9.725) and Juarez (9.700) also had solid marks.

The Golden Bears received event wins from Serena Leong on vault (9.875), Dana Ho on bars (9.825), Alicia Gallarzo on beam (9.825) and Toni-Ann Williams on floor (9.900). Charlie Owens finished first in the all-around with a four-event total of 39.050 to edge Sacramento State's Rice (38.975) and McCartney (38.775).

The Hornets will next compete at Arizona in a four-team meet on Jan. 16. Along with facing the Wildcats, Sacramento State will also meet Illinois-Chicago and Wisconsin-Stout.
