WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WIN STREAK HALTED BY MONTANA STATE

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Sacramento State forced 31 Montana State turnovers but the Bobcats shot 57.6% and outrebounded the Hornets 63-32 while leading wire-to-wire in a 91-64 win on Thursday night in Bozeman, ending Sacramento State's seven game winning streak.

Sacramento State (9-11, 7-2 Big Sky), which shot 46.9% in two home blowout wins last week, was limited to 28.8% shooting by the Bobcats on Thursday. Montana State (8-11, 2-6 Big Sky) picked up just its second Big Sky win but was playing just its third Big Sky home game, improving to 6-2 overall this season on its home floor.

The Hornets drop from the top spot in the Big Sky standings as Montana improved to 7-1 in conference play after a 72-31 thrashing of Portland State on Thursday. The Lady Griz, now 8-1 at home this season and winners of 12 of their last 13 games, host the Hornets at 1 p.m. Pacific time Saturday.

Sacramento State shot 23-of-80 overall and 8-of-36 (22.2%) from 3-point range on Thursday while also going 10-of-21 (47.6%) at the free throw line. Montana State also struggled from the charity stripe but made 18-of-29 as the Hornets were whistled for 26 fouls.

The Bobcats committed 31 turnovers, 21 of which came in the first half, while the Hornets had just 14 giveaways but Sacramento State had just a 23-14 edge in points off turnovers. The Hornets also had just four second chance points despite 16 offensive rebounds and totaled just eight assists for the game.

Senior Takara Burse and sophomore Hallie Gennett each had 13 points to lead the Hornets, but both scored just three points in the second half. Sophomore Brianna Burgos hit a trio of 3-pointers for nine points and Burse led the way with eight rebounds. Burse also had five steals and freshman Maranne Johnson totaled seven, just one shy of the single-game program record.

Montana State jumped to an 8-0 lead to start the game and was up 23-11 before an 8-0 Hornet run got the visitors within a 23-19 deficit at the 11:30 mark of the first half. Sacramento State got within a two-point deficit with two minutes left in the half but the Bobcats took a 41-35 edge into the intermission.

Hornet sophomore Gretchen Harrigan hit a jumper to open the second half and got the Hornets back within four points but the team would get no closer. An 8-0 Bobcat run put the home team up 12 points with 18:15 left to play and the Hornets got no closer than a nine-point deficit through the remainder of the game as Montana State shot 60.7% and had a relatively low 10 turnovers in the second half.

Five Bobcats scored in double figures for the game with Jasmine Hommes leading the way with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting with seven rebounds. Peyton Ferris had 13 points and nine rebounds but seven turnovers for Montana State, which had lost seven of its last eight games entering play on Thursday but had spent most of that time playing on the road.

On Saturday Sacramento State will be looking for its first win at Montana in program history as the team is 0-19 all-time in Missoula, historically the toughest place to play in the Big Sky for all conference teams.
