WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STAYS RED HOT WITH 108-65 ROUT OF WEBER STATE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After a 31-point win over Idaho State on Thursday Sacramento State outdid itself on Saturday, tying the program record for margin of victory in a Big Sky game with a 108-65 rout over Weber State.

Sacramento State (9-10, 7-1 Big Sky) won its seventh consecutive game, now two wins shy of the program-record nine game winning streak the team had last season, to remain on top of the Big Sky standings. Weber State (8-11, 3-5 Big Sky) lost its eighth consecutive game against the Hornets and has not defeated the team in Sacramento since 2008.

The 43-point margin of victory equaled the team's largest win in program history over a Big Sky opponent as the squad won 103-60 in 2013, also against Weber State. The 108 points scored was the fourth most in a game in program history and just three shy of the program record of 111, set last year at Weber State.

"I loved our energy level to start the game," Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "Weber State is an athletic basketball team and their strengths are things are things we've had a hard time with; they do such a good job on the offensive glass and can be really frustrating to play against. We were not only able to get to the rim and finish but most of our drives were pretty well timed."

Five Hornets scored in double-figures in another tremendous team victory as all 15 Hornets that played in the game scored points. Sophomore Gretchen Harrigan led the way with a career-high 21 points, shooting 9-of-12 from the field, while senior Andrea Chenier recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

Senior Fantasia Hilliard also had 15 points and moved ahead of former Hornet Charday Hunt into eighth in program history in career scoring. Sophomore Brianna Burgos had 12 points and four rebounds, leading the team with two 3-point makes, and senior Takara Burse chipped in 11 points and a team-high five assists.

"We (got) something from everybody and we're going to have to have that," Harkleroad said. "I still think we have a lot of room for improvement on the offensive and defensive sides of the basketball but when the energy is good like that it's a lot of fun."

Sacramento State made seven threes in just 26 attempts, in large part due to its ability to get into the paint and finish. The Hornets had a season-high 64 points in the paint while allowing just 30. Also, for the first time this season, Sacramento State had a higher field goal percentage than its opponent after shooting a season-best 52.3% and holding the Wildcats to 33.8% from the field.

Saturday's game started a little slower than the team's Thursday night win as the Hornets led by just one, 17-16, with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half. They put the pedal on the gas from there, going on a 19-3 run over the next five minutes to open a 36-19 advantage.

The Hornets led by as many as 20 points in the first half and were up 18 at halftime. Weber State could get no closer in the second half as the Hornets reached a 30-point edge with 13:02 to play and saw their lead grow to 40 at 86-46 with still 8:53 left in the game.

Sacramento State, which had an 18-1 advantage in points off turnovers and a 32-14 advantage in points in the paint in the second half, went ahead by 45 on a layup by Ericka Magaña with one minute remaining but the Wildcats made the last field goal.

The Hornets and Wildcats finished even in rebounding, with 48 apiece, while Weber State actually had two more offensive rebounds but was still outscored 22-16 in second chance points. The home team forced 27 turnovers on 18 steals while giving the ball away just 12 times and had a 37-7 advantage in points off turnovers and a 6-1 edge in blocked shots.

Much like Thursday, the only area where the Hornets struggled on Saturday was at the free throw line, going 19-of-31 overall. Weber State was nearly as bad, shooting 16-of-26 at the line, and made just 3-of-13 from 3-point range.

For Weber State junior Jalen Carpenter led the way with 14 points and 12 rebounds while junior Regina Okoye, who leads NCAA Div.-1 averaging more than four steals per game, had 11 points but just two steals with six turnovers. Weber State's .338 field goal percentage was the lowest against the Hornets this season by nearly eight percent.

Sacramento State takes its seven-game winning streak on the road next week facing Montana State at 6 p.m. Pacific time Thursday and Montana at 1 p.m. next Saturday in a game that will likely feature the top-two teams in the Big Sky Conference.
