Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Loyola Marymount's Caitlin DeWitt had 12 kills and led a Lion offensive attack that hit .440 on the way to a three-set sweep (25-14, 25-13, 25-21) of the Hornets in the second round of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational.
The Hornets, who dropped to 0-2 at the two-day tournament and 2-4 overall, will play their final match of the tournament this evening against UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m. In this morning's other tournament matchup, UC Santa Barbara defeated Fresno State, 3-1.
Loyola Marymount is now 2-0 at the tournament and 5-0 this season, and has now swept all five of its opponents this year. That includes a victory over national power UCLA last week.
The Hornets' largest lead of the afternoon came at 2-0 early in the third set as Loyola Marymount's offensive attack had 45 kills with just eight errors in 84 attacks. In fact, the Lions hit .345, .577 and .414, respectively, during the three sets. Three LMU players hit at least .500, comprised of DeWitt (.706), Litara Keil (nine kills, .533) and Hannah Tedrow (.500).
Loyola Marymount held large statistical advantages over Sacramento State in kills (45-31), hitting percentage (.440-.153), assists (45-29), aces (9-3) and total blocks (12.0-2.0).
Of Sacramento State's 31 kills, sophomore Madeline Cannon led the way with seven while freshmen Kennedy Kurtz and Shannon Boyle both had five kills. Kurtz, who is a setter, hit .625, including five kills without an error in eight attacks. Junior Lauren Aikels had three kills and hit .429. The Hornets' outside hitter combination of Sloan Lovett (4) and Morgan Stanley (3) were limited to a combined seven kills.
The Hornets did hit .303 in the third set and fought all the way back from a 14-8 deficit to get within, 22-21, but the Lions closed the frame on a 3-0 run to take the set and match.
