Box Score FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State took a 1-0 lead on a goal late in the first half but in the second half Hornet sophomore Lydia Bowman scored on a penalty kick and later assisted on the game winning goal by freshman Kylee Smith as Sacramento State earned a 2-1 win on Sunday night in Fresno.
Senior goalkeeper Kimberly Mata equaled her season high with eight saves as Sacramento State concluded nonconference play with a 5-4-0 record with the win. Fresno State lost its eighth consecutive game to drop to 1-8-0 on the year.
Fresno State had a 15-10 shot advantage in the game and controlled play through much of the first half, outshooting the Hornets 6-2. Sacramento State didn't post its first shot of the game until the 28th minute and failed to place a shot on goal in the period.
The Bulldogs scored in the 44th minute off a Hornet defensive turnover at midfield. Freshman Payton Kline stole the ball and led teammate Julia Campos on a break towards the Hornet goal for a close shot off Mata and into the net.
In the 51st minute, Sacramento State sophomore Adaurie Dayak had a header try in the box stopped by Bulldog goalkeeper Alyssa Wilson. On the shot Dayak was pushed to the ground by a Fresno State defender and the official called the foul to give the Hornets a penalty kick. Bowman then buried the shot into the bottom right corner of the Fresno State goal to tie the game.
The Hornets had much of the offensive pressure in the second half and totaled seven shots on goal in the period. Sacramento State was able to find the game winner in the 77th minute as Bowman connected to Smith on the run and the freshman fired into the far corner from near the left edge of the Fresno State box.
Freshman Andrea Boehm nearly added another score three minutes later but her shot hit the post. Mata made two saves down the stretch to close out the win.
Bowman and Smith each scored their first career goal while Bowman became the first Hornet this season to record multiple points in a game. With her team-leading third assist of the year and the goal Bowman now leads the Hornets with five points. The penalty kick was the first for or against the Hornets this season.
Big Sky Conference play commences this coming week. Sacramento State will play at Southern Utah on Friday and at Northern Arizona next Sunday.
