WOMEN'S SOCCER DOWNED BY UC SANTA BARBARA 2-0

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After a scoreless first half UC Santa Barbara found the net twice in the second half and withstood some strong Horner scoring chances in a 2-0 win on Friday at Hornet Field.

"That's a good team and we were missing some key players and I thought we put together a pretty good effort," Sacramento State head coach Randy Dedini said. "It seemed like in the second half we started getting tired and, missing some key players, we didn't have as many subs. I felt like the effort was there both halves but they started breaking us down in the second half and we had a couple little mistakes and they capitalized."

Sacramento State (4-4-0) had several prime scoring opportunities in the contest. Just three minutes into the game Hornet senior Kristen Bridges had an open shot right in front of the goal but was denied Gaucho junior goalkeeper Beth Ritter.

The try by Bridges would be the only Hornet shot in the first half, and though UC Santa Barbara (4-3-2) had a 5-1 shot advantage through the first 45 minutes, the visitors could only put one try on goal as well in scoreless first period.

UC Santa Barbara's first shot of the second half, in the 51st minute, tallied the first score of the game. After a Gaucho corner kick freshman Kate Shoemaker sent a pass to the top of the box to teammate Chace Schornstein, who fired a shot that deflected into the Hornet goal.

The Hornets nearly tied the game in the 58th minute after freshman Kylee Smith stole a pass deep inside the box but her point-blank was shot stopped by Ritter. In the 62nd minute, a free kick from senior Kassi Anast found sophomore Rachel Leonard for a volley try in the goal mouth that sailed just high.

The Gauchos would add an insurance goal in the 81st minute with a short cross along the end line by junior Angelisa Cortez finished in front by sophomore Sarah Feder. Leonard had a shot blocked in the 88th minute as UCSB finished the win.

The Hornets allowed more than one goal for the first time this season. UC Santa Barbara held a 15-6 shot advantage in the game and was 5-3 in shots on goal.

Neither team had a corner kick in the first half and the Hornets didn't have any all game while the Gauchos totaled six in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Kimberly Mata made three saves in the game and Ritter had three saves for the shutout.

Sacramento State will conclude the nonconference portion of its schedule with a game at Fresno State on Sunday at 6 p.m.
