Box Score SAN JOSE, Calif. – Sacramento State led by 10 points at the half after shooting 42% in the first period but the Hornets shot just 25% in the second half and were 2-of-22 (9.1%) from 3-point range as San Jose State pulled out a 102-94 victory.
Sacramento State (2-9) broke its own Big Sky record with 104 field goal attempts in the game, 10 more shots than any Big Sky team had ever attempted in a game in the history of the conference. Facing former head coach Jamie Craighead the Hornets went cold in the second half while San Jose State (6-5) heated up, shooting 52.3% overall and 6-of-12 from 3-point range over the final 20 minutes.
Hornet senior Fantasia Hilliard nearly had a triple-double in the game, finishing with 22 points, a career-high tying 10 rebounds, and eight assists, despite shooting 9-of-28 from the field. Sophomore Margaret Huntington had a career-high 18 rebounds and scored seven points, and Gretchen Harrigan had career highs with 20 points and seven rebounds.
Hilliard scored 16 points in the first half as did sophomore Hallie Gennett, who finished with 22 points. The Hornets went 6-of-17 from 3-point range in the first half but simply could not make threes consistently in the second half. Despite the Big Sky-record shot attempts total the squad made just 34 field goals.
In a back-and-forth first half San Jose State led 34-32 with 7:23 left in the period. Sacramento State then went on a 12-4 run over the next three minutes, punctuated by a Gennett 3-pointer at the 4:20 mark – her fifth 3-pointer made in the half. The Hornets led by 11 points in the final minute of the half and held a 53-43 halftime lead.
The Spartans opened the second half on a 17-7 run to draw even at 60-60. The run extended to give San Jose State an eventual 10-point lead after the Hornets had just two made field goals over a six minute stretch. The deficit was just four points in the final minutes but the Spartans made their late free throws to complete the win.
The teams were equal with 61 rebounds apiece while the Hornets, who lead the NCAA in offensive rebounds, grabbed 31 boards on the offensive glass. San Jose State came into the game ranked second in the country in turnover margin but the Hornets forged a 13-24 edge in turnovers. The Spartans did have 11 blocks in the game had a 30-12 edge in fast break points.
Six San Jose State players scored in double figures, led by 19 points off the bench from Rachol West, who made five of the eight Spartan 3-pointers in the game. Ten different Spartan players scored in the game and all 12 San Jose State players in the game had at least one rebound.
With Craighead, Hornet head coach Bunky Harkleroad, and former coach Dan Muscatell (an assistant for Craighead), three of the five head coaches in Sacramento State program history were on the floor on Monday. Former Hornet players Alle Moreno and Jourdan Willard were also involved in the contest on the Spartan staff.
Monday's game concluded the non-conference portion of Sacramento State's schedule. The squad opens Big Sky Conference play on New Year's Day at Northern Arizona. Tip time will be 1 p.m. Pacific.
