Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Playing its first home game in nearly a month, Sacramento State got a career-high 27 points from sophomore Hallie Gennett and a double-double of 16 points and 12 assists from senior Fantasia Hilliard to score a 102-92 win over Utah State.
Sacramento State (2-8) attempted 57 three-pointers in the game, one shy of their own NCAA single game record, and made 20, just one fewer than its own Big Sky record. Utah State (3-8) shot an absurd 70.7% from the field (41-58), the highest opponent field goal percentage against the Hornets in program history, but committed 29 turnovers and did not make a single 3-pointer.
"I thought we competed hard and we had several players step up that needed to step up," Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said. "We're happy to get the win and happy with our effort. We played a lot smarter tonight then we have in the past and I think we took a step forward.
"One of the things we said before the game was to play like you're glad to be back home. That was a difference too - it would have been a much tougher game to play them on the road."
In just their third home game of the season the Hornets improved to 2-1 in The Nest behind season-highs in points, made 3-pointers, and assists (26). Hilliard recorded her ninth career double-double while equaling her career high in assists. Gennett made seven 3-pointers and topped her career high point total of 26, which she achieved in her first collegiate game last season against Cal State Northridge.
Utah State committed 16 turnovers in the first eight and a half minutes of the game as the Hornets stormed to an early 26-8 lead. The Aggies settled down and got back within three points in the final minute of the half and the Hornet lead was just five at halftime.
Sacramento State started the second half almost as well as the first half, opening the half on an 8-0 run and taking a game-high 20-point lead at 67-47 with 14:55 left in the game. Utah State got back within ten points with nine minutes left and cut their deficit to six points with 1:52 remaining in regulation time.
Hornet senior guard Andrea Chenier answered with a big 3-pointer and Sacramento State made five free throws in the final minute to finish the victory.
Gennett scored in double figures for the sixth consecutive game and reached 20 points for the third time this season and ninth time in her short Hornet career.
"It was pretty exciting. I honestly lost count but I knew I made a couple threes at the beginning and then I just played and kept my confidence up," Gennett said. "It was kind of weird (being home) and going through the routine but it was really exciting. A lot of people saw the court tonight and we all played really well so I would say it was a good team effort."
Chenier finished with 17 points off five made 3-pointers while sophomore Gretchen Harrigan had career-highs with 13 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Maranne Johnson had nine points and five steals and Hilliard added four thefts to her double-double line.
Utah State had a 41-36 rebounding edged but the Hornets grabbed 25 offensive boards to take 30 more shots than the visitors. The Hornets forced 29 turnovers while committing just 12 and outscored the Aggies 42-17 in points off turnovers, but the visitors had a 70-26 edge in points in the paint.
Hannah Hutchins, a 6-4 center, led the Aggies with 25 points, shooting 11-of-13 from the field. Tilar Clark shot 8-of-10 from the field for 16 points and Tijana Djukic had 14 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for Utah State, which attempted just three 3-pointers in the game.
