MEN'S SOCCER PLAYS UC DAVIS TO SCORELESS DRAW AT BONNEY FIELD

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Playing under the lights at Bonney Field for the first time, Sacramento State causeway rival UC Davis had a 26-10 shot advantage but Hornet sophomore goalkeeper Philip Bru made 11 saves and after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Making his first start in goal since Sept. 19, Bru's 11 stops were the most by a Hornet goalkeeper since 2010. He recorded his second shutout of the season as the Hornets played their first scoreless draw of the year.

In the 18th all-time meeting between the Hornets and the Aggies the teams played to a tie for the first time. The tie was just the third of the year for Sacramento State (4-9-3, 2-4-1 Big West) while UC Davis (6-1-9, 4-1-2 Big West) equaled NCAA single season records with its 11th overtime game and ninth tie of the season.

The game, dubbed the Causeway Classico, was played before an announced crowd of 878 fans on the home field for Sacramento Republic FC as both schools were well supported despite cool and rainy conditions.

"It was nice to play here. It was a good environment for both teams," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "I think the weather maybe kept a few people away but both sets of players really enjoyed the environment and the atmosphere and playing at night in this stadium was a treat. We were hoping to give them a good experience and I think they got one."

The 26 shots for UC Davis equaled the most the Hornets have allowed this season. The Aggies had a 9-3 shot advantage in the first half, a 13-6 edge in the second half, and a 4-1 total over the two overtime periods. Both teams had some good scoring chances, though, but neither team could find the back of the net.

UC Davis had most of the good looks in the first half but there was a 14 minute stretch in which neither team attempted a shot. Hornet senior Cody Hoster had a header attempt miss just wide in the first half and Bru made three stops in the opening period.

In the second half the Hornets had their best scoring opportunity in the 53rd minute when senior Chimdum Mez played a bouncing ball at the top of the box over UC Davis goalkeeper Armando Quezada but an Aggie defender was able to clear the ball to prevent the goal. Among UC Davis' chances in the half the best came on a close header attempt by Noah Wilson that missed inches wide.

Bru made six saves in the second half and one more in each overtime period. UC Davis had four corner kicks over the final four and a half minutes of the second overtime but was unable to find a way to beat the Hornet backstop.

"I was very happy with my team's energy today and the competing was fantastic," Linenberger said. "I was disappointed with the consistency of our actual soccer playing tonight (in terms of) possession, moving the ball, connecting passes, and creativity going forward. I didn't think we had a lot of that so that part was disappointing but I couldn't have asked for anything more with the effort they gave tonight."

The short-handed Hornets used just 13 players in the contest, using only two non-starters in the game. There were five yellow cards in the game, four of which went to Sacramento State, and the rivals combined for 33 fouls.

Quezada finished with three saves for his fifth shutout of the year. UC Davis senior Matt Sheldon had a game-high five shots and three shots on goal while Hoster and senior Adan Martinez each had two shots to lead the Hornets.

With only three games remaining in the regular season the Hornets are just four points back of a qualifying spot for the Big West Tournament. Sacramento State plays its next two matches on the road, facing Cal Poly on Wednesday night before a rematch with the Aggies in Davis next Saturday.
