WOMEN'S SOCCER FINDS SCORING TOUCH IN 2-0 WIN OVER WEBER STATE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After some near misses in the first half Sacramento State struck for a pair of goals in the second half and held Weber State to minimal offensive space in a 2-0 win on Friday at Hornet Field.

Sacramento State (6-8-0, 1-4-0 Big Sky) picked up its first conference win and doubled its scoring total in conference play. Picked to finish second in the Big Sky preseason poll after winning the Big Sky Tournament last season, injury-riddled Weber State (4-10-0, 1-4-0 Big Sky) remained winless on the road this season.

"We're taking it one game at a time now and that's all we can really do," Sacramento State head coach Randy Dedini said. "We've been playing pretty well all season so it's nice to finally get the result at the end of it. I thought the girls played really well for 90 minutes today and we did what we had to do. We've been hitting posts left and right and putting a lot of pressure on and the balls weren't just bouncing are way, but today the girls made sure to find the back of the net."

Redshirt sophomore Maggie Pleis and senior Shelby Salvacion were the goal scorers for the Hornets, striking in the 64th and 78th minutes, respectively. Sacramento State tallied its fifth multi-goal game of the season while recording its fourth shutout.

The Hornets were outshot 6-5 in the first half but had the two best scoring chances of the period. In the 30th minute, Hornet junior Presley Strother ripped a shot from the top of the box that beat the keeper but hit off the crossbar. Late in the half in the 44th minute, sophomore Jennifer Lum had a close shot but it hit the right post.

Both Hornet goalkeeper Kimberly Mata and Weber State backstop Sydnie Stokes had to make just one save in the scoreless and mostly even played first half. The field tipped the Hornets way in the second half as the team had an 8-5 shot advantage and put three shots on goal.

In the 64th minute, Pleis had a good scoring chance blocked out of bounds by the Wildcat defense. On the ensuing corner kick, Pleis played a short ball to sophomore Lydia Bowman, who passed back to Pleis for a close-angle finish off Stokes and into the top corner of the Weber State goal.

The Hornets had three more shots shortly after the first goal and doubled their lead with just 12 minutes to play as sophomore Alexa Heinzer had a pass along the end line deflected to Salvacion, who blasted a shot from 15 yards over Stokes and just under the crossbar.

Mata had to make just a pair of routine saves in the second half after a superb save on the first Weber State shot in the first half. Pleis, Bowman, and Strother each had two shots for the Hornets while Mackenzie Harrison had all three shots on goal for the Wildcats.

Salvacion returned to the Hornet lineup for the first time since Sept. 12, a game in which she also scored a goal, after nursing a concussion. Bowman had her team-leading fourth assist of the season while Pleis became the 11th Hornet player to score a goal this season.

The Hornets played in front of a season-high crowd of 456 fans as several schools attended the game for Field Trip Day.

Sacramento State closes its four-match Big Sky homestand at noon Sunday hosting Idaho State. Prior to the game the six Hornet seniors Mata, Salvacion, Kassi Anast, Kristen Bridges, Lauren Garcia, and Jessica Small will be honored.
