SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team and No. 18 ranked Saint Mary's battled for a full 110 minutes but neither team could get on the scoreboard as the Hornets and the Gaels played to a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The Hornets (1-1-1) put three of their 12 shot attempts on net while the Gaels (1-0-1) placed five of their 12 tries - including a penalty kick - on frame but neither keeper yielded a goal.

Sacramento State goalie Bryan Oliver made four saves, but none was more important than a penalty kick stop late in the second half of regulation. After a foul in the box, Saint Mary's midfielder Jose Cabeza lined up for the penalty and drove his shot low and to the right post. Oliver guessed correctly and caught the ball in his stomach while diving to the ground.

Saint Mary's keeper Andre Rawls made three saves but the Hornets two best chances didn't end in saves. Both sophomore Chimdum Mez and senior Max Alvarez had good looks late in the game but their shots sailed over the cross bar.

As a team the Hornets took nine corner kicks compared to three by the Gaels while Saint Mary's was whistled for nine more fouls (23) than the Hornets (14).

Saint Mary's was yellow carded four times, compared to one to Sacramento State, before the Gaels' Michael Semenza was issued a red card after getting tangled up with Sacramento State defender Casey Bernard in the box prior to a free kick attempt late in the second overtime period. Bernard was also given a red and neither player will be allowed to suit up for his team's next game.

Sacramento State has one more game remaining on its three-game homestand, with Seattle U visiting Hornet Field at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The Hornets have five more non-league games before starting its inaugural season in Big West Conference play.
