WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS THRILLER TO PENN

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Quakers scored in the second overtime and the Sacramento State women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker, 3-2, to Penn on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The Hornets (2-4-2) scored late to force overtime but the Quakers (3-3) rallied to win in extra time.

Megan Burg scored her first goal of the season with just over a minute left to play when Elece McBridefound her with a pass in a two-on-one situation. Burg took a dribble toward the net and crushed a shot to the far post for the equalizer.

Burg's goal was for naught, however, as Penn's Erin Mikolai scored a point-blank goal that bounced down off the crossbar and in.

Victoria Ramirez put the Hornets on the board in the 24th minute with her second goal of the season. After Shelby Salvacion made a long run down the field to win a 50-50 ball, she was fouled 35 yards away from the goal. Ramirez lined up for the free kick and sailed a high shot toward the net where it skipped off the finger tips of Penn's leaping keeper, Sarah Banks, for the long goal.

But in the second half, Penn used two goals off corner kicks to take the lead but couldn't hold on in regulation.

Sacramento State opens up Big Sky Conference play next weekend with a trip to league newcomer North Dakota on Friday before visiting Northern Colorado on Sunday.
