Joey Elftmann

Joey Elftmann completed his second stint on Sacramento State’s coaching staff in 2021 where he served as the team’s volunteer assistant. Elftmann spent two years as a graduate assistant with the Hornets during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Overall, Elftmann brings over 15 years of coaching experience to the Hornets’ staff, and is the winner of multiple national championships.

Most recently, the Sacramento native spent three years as the head coach of San Francisco’s women’s club volleyball team from 2016-18. During those three seasons, the two-time NCCVL Coach of the Year led the Dons to a pair of national championships and a 104-15 combined record. After taking over a program that finished with a record below .500 during the 2015 season, Elftmann led the 2016 squad to a 30-5 record and an NCVF Div. II national title.

The next season (2017), despite making the jump to the Div. I ranks, his team went 34-5 and won another NCVF national championship.

As a graduate assistant with the Hornets (2009, 2010), he assisted with practice planning, player development and game strategies while also being responsible for game charting and stats via Data Volley.

Prior to his first stint at Sacramento State, Elftmann spent five years (2006-10) as the head coach for the UC Davis men’s club volleyball team. He guided the Aggies to a gold bracket finish at Nationals in three of his five seasons at the helm. In addition, he led the team to its first ever NCCVL regular season championship in 2007 and a first place finish at the Far Western Collegiate Invitational.

As a player, Elftmann competed for UC Davis’ club team from 2003-05. That included a pair of top five finishes at Nationals during his playing tenure with the Aggies.

Elftmann graduated from UC Davis in 2005 with a Communications degree and minors in English and Education. He would later add a master’s degree in Kinesiology from Sacramento State in 2012.
